ASSIGNMENT – III
1. What do you mean by ‘ Balancing of Reciprocating Engine’?
2. Explain the terms : Primary disturbing force and Secondary disturbing force.
3. For the reciprocating engine, prove that
(i) Maximum value of secondary disturbing force = Primary Disturbing force.
Where n = ratio of length of connecting rod to crank length.
(ii) For one revolution of the crank, the maximum value of primary force occurs two
times whereas the maximum value of secondary force occurs four times.
4. Explain the term ‘ Partial Balancing of Primary forces’? Why it is necessary?
5. What do you understand by inside cylinder locomotive and outside cylinder
locomotives? What is the effect of partial balancing of locomotive?
6. Explain the terms : Variation of tractive force; swaying couple and hammer blow.
7. Prove that the maximum Variation of tractive force is obtained when θ = 135o or 315o.
Also prove that maximum Variation of tractive force is equal to √
mRω2r,
where C is the fraction of the mass of reciprocating parts which is to be balanced.
8. Prove that maximum swaying couple is equal to √
mRω2r , where a =
distance between the centre line of the two cylinders and C = fraction of the mass of
reciprocating parts which is to be balanced.
9. Prove that the limiting condition for the angular speed when the wheel does not lift the
rails is given by
ω = Where P = Static Wheel Load, mb = Balancing mass
