Basic Mathematics: By: Nurul Najwa Binti Saaidon Fatin Khairunnisa Dol

This document contains a summary of three math word problems and their step-by-step solutions: 1) A flower puzzle where different flowers represent values and the totals vertically and horizontally must be found. The values were determined to be roses=9, tulips=5, and daisies=6, with a missing total of 24. 2) A fence problem where a garden was fenced with 26 posts and longer sides used 5 more posts than shorter sides. The sides were determined to be 10 posts for longer and 5 posts for shorter. 3) A triangle counting problem where a larger triangle is divided into three smaller triangles. Through drawing diagrams, it was determined there were a total of 6

PROBLEM 1
Read the question carefully…

The different types of flowers stands

for different values in this puzzles.
When the values of the flowers are
added vertically or horizontally,they
give the total values as shown. Find
out the value of each type of flower,
and then find the missing total.

the

Find the important
information…

Write down the key information..

different value.
• The total values as shown when the

and horizontally.

STEP 2

Devise
a
plan
Choose a method to be used

Use a graph Use formulas

Guess and check Make a list
Find a pattern Work backwards
Use reasoning Draw a diagram
Make a table Act it out
Decide how to solve the problem…

• The value of + + =
27
• By dividing 27 to 3, we know the
value of one is 9.
• Since we know the value of one
flower, we can solve the puzzle.
STEP 3

Carry
out the
plan
Step 1:
Find the value of
How?
Using row 2
+ + = 20 , =9

+ + 9 = 20

+ = 11
Using row 3
+ + = 17

11 + = 17

=6
Find the value of

+ = 11 , =6

+ 6 = 11

=5
Therefore, the value of each flower is:

=9 =5 =6
Step 2:

We can solve the puzzle as we know all

the value of the flowers.
+ + =?

It’s equal to 9 + 9 + 6 = 24
So, the total missing is 24
STEP 4

Look
back
We check again our answer by solving
puzzle in column 2.

+ + = 20

5 + 6 + 9 = 20

The total missing : 9 + 9 + 6 = 24

Therefore the answer is correct.
Problem 2
Read the question carefully…

Mrs Harriman decided to enclosed an area of

her garden to use as a vegetable patch. She
had to make sure that the rectangular area
was fenced on all sides so that the sheep
would not wander in and munch on her
vegetables. She used 26 posts to make the
entire fence but used five more posts on the
longer sides than the shorter sides. How
many posts are on each side?

Write down the key information..

1) The area that was fenced for vegetable

patch is rectangle.
2) The area was fenced on all sides.
3) She used 26 posts to make entire fence.
4) But, she used five more posts on the

a
plan
Choose methods to be used

Use a graph Use formulas

Guess and check Make a list
Find a pattern Work backwards
Use reasoning Draw a diagram
Make a table Act it out
Decide how to solve the problem…

We must first find the sizes of the

rectangle that used five more posts on
the longer sides than the shorter sides.
First, we list several possibilities of
sides that can make the rectangle in a
table. Then, we draw a diagram of each
possibility of sides to count the posts
used to make the rectangle.
STEP 3

Carry
out the
plan
Step 1:
The possibilities of sides that can make the
rectangle are:
No of trial 1 2 3 4
Longer 7 8 9 10
sides
Shorter 2 3 4 5
sides
After that, to make sure only 26 posts are used
to enclose the vegetable patch, we need to draw a
rectangle of each trial.
Here are the steps before we draw the rectangle:
Let stand for one post. Then draw one side of
the rectangle, which is the longest side. Then
continue with the second side (shortest side). The
corner posts are used once on each side. The
third line will again reuse the corner post also.
Same goes to the other rectangles.
Trial The side of rectangle Diagram No. of posts
used
Longer : 7
1 14
Shorter: 2
2 Longer: 8 18
Shorter: 3
Longer: 9
3 Shorter: 4 22

4 Longer: 10
Shorter: 5
26
After we had drawn the diagram of the
posts, the answer is 10 posts for the
longer side and 5 posts for the shorter
side.
STEP 4

Look
back
To double check the answer, we can use
rolled paper as the posts and
polystyrene with holes as the land to
make sure the answer is correct.
PROBLEM 3
PROBLEM 3

Figure 3.1
Look at the figure above carefully, how
many triangles are there in this figure?
Answer:
Strategy 1: UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM

1) The larger triangle is divided into

three smaller triangles.
2) Two or more triangles can put
together to form a new, larger
triangle.
3) What is the total numbers of
triangles?
Strategy 2 :DEVISE A PLAN

For this question, the strategy

selected is using the diagram. Draw
a diagram to help see all the
triangles. Keep redrawing the figure
to identify the triangles.
Strategy 3 : CARRY OUT THE PLAN

1 2 3 4 5 6

As a conclusion there are 6 triangles in the

original figure.
Strategy 4 :LOOK BACK
To double check the answer, we can make a table
and list out the information.

No. of triangle in 1 large No. of triangles.

triangle
If one triangle 1 triangle
if two triangle 3 triangles
If three triangle 6 triangles
Table:3.2
So, as there are three triangles in one large triangle,
the answer is 6 triangles all together.
