In “Beowulf,” the major theme for this story is that good overcomes evil.
“Beowulf” is an epic story about a man who tries what he can to stop the man who
kills the people of Denmark, and Beowulf is brave enough to actually try and stop
the horrid beast, Grendel. Beowulf, the hero of the epic, is “the mighty protector of
men.” (Line 366) Beowulf is said to be (greater and stronger than anyone
anywhere in the world,” (Lines 110-111) and his primary mission is to stop
Grendel, and in the future, the beast’s mother, and a dragon. Grendel and his
mother are both descendants of Cain, who are “murderous creatures banished by
god, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death, and they split into a thousand
forms of evil, which includes spirits and fiends, goblins, monsters, giants, a broad
of forever opposing Lord’s Will, and again and again defeated.” (Lines 21-29)
Later on in the epic, Beowulf and Grendel have a battle. As Grendel was arriving
to battle, he actually killed one of the Geats, and while he was killing him,
Beowulf paid close attention to the battle. And then, once the two meet up, the
fought to the bitter end. Grendel put a spell the weapons, so he will not get hurt
from the weapons that the soldiers have used. But Beowulf is actually really
strong, that he had the strength to actually kill Grendel by pulling his entire arm
out of his socket, giving the victory to Beowulf. Beowulf then goes to the
monster’s lair to defeat Grendel’s mother. Grendel’s mother was so strong, almost
no weapon could even defeat her, and even though Beowulf is strong with his
hands, he was still unable to defeat Grendel’s Mother. Then, Beowulf found a
weapon that was too large for any mankind to handle, but he was able to use it, and
he defeated Grendel’s mother. The Danes didn’t believe Beowulf survived, and
they went back home. The Geats still think that Beowulf was still alive, so they all
waited, just to happily know that Beowulf is safe, and Grendel’s mother is
defeated. 50 years later, Beowulf became king of the Geats, now plans to defeat the
Dragon in the towers. Even though he tried to defeat the dragon, and has failed.
His “weapons had failed him,” (Lines 696-697) and the dragon defeated Beowulf.
Then, another soldier, named Wiglaf, came to help Beowulf after he was defeated.
He fought and fought, and he ended up defeating the dragon. Later on, before
Beowulf died, he has given Wiglaf the title “King of the Geats” and has given him
“the golden necklace from around his (Beowulf) throat to Wiglaf, his Gold-

covered helmet, his rings, and his mail shirt.” (Lines 831-834) The battles all
represent that evil is no match for the good, when every time when there is a story
with a protagonist and an antagonist, the protagonist always have the win.
