Assignment Design

This document discusses two mechanical engineering design problems involving static loading and factor of safety calculations. The first problem involves calculating the factor of safety at two points on a loaded bar made of AISI 1006 steel. The second problem involves (1) finding the critical location and principal stresses on an arm welded to a round bar loaded with 2.2 kN, (2) calculating the factor of safety using distortion energy theory assuming the bar is AISI 1060 steel heated to 540°C, and (3) calculating the factor of safety using maximum shear stress theory and discussing any differences from the distortion energy calculation.

ASSIGNMENT 1

Failure Resulting from Static Loading

S1. This problem illustrates that the factor of safety for a machine element depends on
the particular point selected for analysis. Here you are to compute factor of safety,
based upon the distortion-energy theory, for stress elements at A and B of the
member shown in figure. This bar is made of AISI 1006 cold-drawn steel and is
loaded by the forces F = 0.55 kN, P = 8.0 kN, and T = 30 Nm.

S2. An arm as shown in figure below was loaded with 2.2 kN. This arm is weld to a
round bar that has been attached to the wall.
a) Find the critical location and determine the principal stress.
b) This round bar is made from material AISI 1060 quenched and tempered
steel at temperature 540oC. Find the factor of safety by using distortion
energy theory and give conclusion from your answer.
c) Find the factor of safety by using MSS theory and give conclusion from
your finding. Is the answer is different compare to b? Why? Discuss about
it.

B
D = 30 mm
A Z
d = 25 mm

F = 2.2 kN
