Sentence, Phrase and Clause


Sentence: A SENTENCE is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate, and expresses a
complete thought.

Example:
Mary had a little lamb.

Phrase: A phrase is a group of two or more words that acts as a single unit in the syntax of a sentence. It
does not contain a subject and predicate, and does not express a complete thought.

Examples:
on the surface
of great interest
a slice of bread.

Clause: An expression including a subject and predicate but not constituting a complete sentence.

Example:
He has a swimming pool which is as big as a lagoon.
where “which” (referring to the noun)
is the subject and
“is as big as a lagoon” is the predicate.

2. I Feel Fine (Sentence)
3. She Loves You (Sentence)
4. In My Life (Phrase)
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Clause)

Phrase Clause conversion :


1. Working of Ahmed surprised us. (Phrase)
When Ahmed was worked we were all surprised. (Clause)

2. The sun rises in the east. (Phase)


The sun rises in the direction which is in the east. (Clause)
