Tutorial 1 1011

This document is a tutorial for the engineering mathematics course BMM 2112. It contains 4 problems involving using Taylor series expansions to estimate or predict values of functions. Problem 1 asks to use zero through third order Taylor series to estimate e-x at x=1.2 based on the value at x=0.2. Problem 2 involves using successive terms of the Maclaurin series for cos(x) to estimate cos(π/3). Problems 3 and 4 similarly use Taylor series to predict values of other functions.

CHAPTER 1 Miss Rozieana Binti Khairuddin.
FKM.

1. Use the Taylor series to estimate f(x) = e  x at xi 1  1 for xi =0.2. Employ the zero-, first-,
second-, and third –order versions and compute the  t for each case.
Ans:

2. The Maclaurin series expansion for cos x is

x 2 x 4 x 6 x8
cos x  1      ...
2 4! 6! 8!

 
Starting with the simplest version, cos x =1, add terms one at a time to estimate cos . .
3
After each new term is added, compute the true and approximate percent relative errors. Stop
when the absolute value of the approximate error estimate falls below an error criterion
conforming to two significant figures.
Ans:

3. Use zero-through third-order Taylor series expansion to predict f(3) for

f ( x)  25 x 3  6 x 2  7 x  88

Using a base point at x=1. Compute the true percent relative error  t for each approximation.
Ans:

4. Use zero through forth-order Taylor series expansions to predict f (2) for f(x) =ln x using a
base point at x=1
