Delicious Rolls: H D EL E

This document provides instructions for integrating library resources into elearning environments using Delicious. It discusses setting up resources for web accessibility, creating a taxonomy or "folksonomy" of tags, setting up a Delicious account, bookmarking websites and databases, capturing digital files, creating link rolls, and providing example embed codes to display resources in an online course shell. The goal is to make library resources easily searchable and accessible for students and faculty with minimal effort.

HOW TO USE DELICIOUS TO INTEGRATE YOUR LIBRARIES RESOURCES INTO YOUR ELEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Executive Summary

OBJECTIVE
To make our academic library resources easily accessible to the college community.

GOALS
Increase usage of library resources, leading to higher level of information literacy and lower costs for students.

SOLUTION
Using Delicious to embed our library resources in the college learning environments.

WHAT IS DELICIOUS?
Delicious is a social bookmark site, owned by Yahoo, that allows the global sharing of websites and documents through the
internet. In this “mashup” of library resources and Delicious, Delicious will act as the central database.

BENEFITS OF THIS MASHUP

The embed code and “link rolls” feature of Delicious allows the of library resources to be “owned” and “used” by individu-
als in the college community.

Libraries provide a higher level of service to the community by minimizing the amount of work that it is takes to develop
course packs and reserves and deliver it to students.

We also create a reliable and searchable database of licensed materials available to the community.

It allows the sharing of resources locally and globally

SETTING UP YOUR RESOURCES FOR WEB ACCESSIBILITY

This is a critical component of this project. Delicious bookmarks websites as its primary function and since many academic
libraries have their resources in online databases, it is easy to bookmark and make any of the ebooks and journals available. For
other digital resources like PDF’s, Word documents, or even Photoshop files, they have to be placed on a web server and
accessible via an URL (http://yourserver.com/photoshopflie.psd)

CREATING A TAXONOMY OR BETTER YET A “FOLKSONOMY”

To make it easier for librarians to make information accessible to the communities that they serve, they organize information
using either the Dewey Decimal or the Library of Congress systems. It is good system, but for many people it is just another
“new” system to learn. Using the course numbering system as a way of “tagging” information is one way of meeting the needs of
librarians to organize information and make it relatable to everyone else. “Tags” are free and if your community needs Dewey or
LC subject headings, use them. Here is an example of a series of tags:

EDUC101Brown Journal
EDUC = Program (Subject)

101 = Course Number

Brown = Faculty Name

Journal = Journal (Type of material)

BOOKMARKING WEBSITES IN DELICIOUS

ADDING YOUR ONLINE DATABASES IN DELICIOUS

1. Add the permanent link to the URL box including the EZproxy address that you use to authenticate off campus users.

2. Enter the title in the TITLE box.

3. In the NOTES box, add a description of the Journal (Dates range, publication information, full-text)

4. In the TAGS box, add the proper tags.

CAPTURING A DIGITAL FILE FOR USE IN DELICIOUS

1. Make sure that the digital file is on a web server and accessible via an URL.

2. Enter the URL manually in the URL box.

3. Enter the title in the TITLE box.

4. In the NOTES box, add a description of the digital file.

5. In the TAGS box, add the proper tags.

LINKROLLS

The linkrolls are where we create the embed code used in the project. It takes all of the URLs and tags and combines it into a list
of weblinks that anyone can use.

IN PRACTICE....MY NOTES TO THE LIBRARIANS

I would like to see is a system that allows our resources to be accessible to the faculty and students without a lot of effort on
their part.

Ideally, they would ask their library liaison to add a book or journal article to their Angel course shell (blog or wiki) and we would
add it through Delicious.

In this example, the article would automatically appear in the Chemistry 235 class.

This is the embed code that the faculty/staff member would need to place in their Angel course shell

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://feeds.delicious.com/v2/js/LWTCLearningCommons/chem235%20article?

Coupling Between Thermal Oscillations in the Surface of a Micro-Cylinder an...

This article studies the coupling between prescribed thermal oscillations in the surface of a micro-cylinder and vortex shedding. We deal
with the unsteady, laminar, compressible flow regime where the aerodynamics forces have a periodic behavior. It is shown that
appropriate spatial and time-dependent temperature oscillations on the surface of the micro-cylinder create a resonance that controls
the amplitude and frequency of both lift and drag coefficients. In practice, what we study is a mechanism to modulate the amplitude and
frequency of mechanical loads of aerodynamics origin in a micro-structure by using surface temperature fluctuations as the control
parameter.

If we really wanted to be really cool we could format the embed code for clarity.   Here is my example:
