Issues include high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, unsafe abortion practices, maternal death, and health problems for both mother and baby during and after pregnancy. Adolescent girls also face high risks of HIV infection. Poverty, lack of access to education, information and health services, gender inequality, and traditional gender roles prevent disadvantaged adolescent girls from accessing reproductive healthcare and negotiating safe sex practices.
