Object Complements

Direct Objects

A noun, pronoun or word group that tells who or what receives the action of the verb or that shows
the result of the action.

Answers the question “whom?” or “what?” after a verb

The girl threw the ball.

Indirect Objects

A noun, pronoun or word group that comes before a direct object and tells “to whom?” or “to what?”
(or “for whom?” or “for what?”) the action of the verb is done

There will never be an indirect object in a sentence if there is not a direct object.

If there are both a direct and indirect object in a sentence, the indirect object will always come
before the direct object

She gave me her teddy bear.

Subject Complements

Predicate Adjective

Follows a linking verb; it is an adjective or adjective phrase that describes the subject.

Glaciers are beautiful.

Predicate Noun

Follows a linking verb; it is a noun or noun phrase that renames or defines in some way the
subject.

A glacier is a huge body of ice.
