STORES LAYOUT AND

DESIGN.
INTRODUCTION
► A well planned retail store layout allows a retailer to
maximize the sales.
► Store layout generally show the size and location of
each department.
► Each floor plan and store layout will depend on the type
of products sold,the building location and how much
the business can afford.
► The types of store layout are as follows.

► Grid Layout
 Commonly used in Supermarkets and discount
stores
 One area of display is along the walls of the
store, the other merchandise is displayed in a
parallel manner
 Effective usage of space
 Ideal layout for many retail stores that adopt
self service

► Racetrack layout
 Also called loop layout
 Display will be in the form of a racetrack or a
loop
 Popularly found in Jewellery, textiles showrooms
etc.,

► Freeform Layout
 Merchandise is arranged in an asymmetrical
manner.
 It allows free movement and is often used in
department stores
 It encourage people to browse and shop
 It may not allow for maximum utilization of the
retail space available
Layout selection – Chief
Consideration
► Select a layout that allows for a complete
presentation of the merchandise, to the
customers
► A good layout encourages customers to
move around the complete store and at
times, make an unplanned purchase
► Have a right balance between space used
for displays and service areas, so that ROI is
maximized

► While designing the store, needs of women, the
elderly, children and disabled persons who may
visit the store, need to be taken into account
► Internationally, it is very common to have ramps
available for the movement of wheel chairs and
strollers.
► A store needs to provide seating arrangement for
people, if they expect people to spend hours in a
store.
Atmospherics
► Definition:
 It is the design of the environment with the
help of visual communications, lighting, color,
music and scent, to stimulate the customer’s
perceptual and emotional responses and
thereby, influence his buying behaviour
STRAIGHT FLOOR PLAN
► The straight floor plan is an excellent store layout for
any type of retail store.
► It makes use of the walls and fixtures to create small
spaces within the retail store.
► It is one of the most economical store design.

DIAGONAL FLOOR PLAN
► The diagonal floor plan is a good store layout for self-
service types of retail stores.
► It offers excellent visibility for cashiers and customers.
► The diagonal floor plan invites movement and traffic
flow to the retail store.

ANGULAR FLOOR PLAN
► It is best used for high-end speciality stores.
► The curves and angles of fixtures and walls makes for a
more expensive store design.
► However the soft angles create better traffic low
throughout the retail store.

GEOMETRIC FLOOR PLAN
► This plan is a suitable store design for clothing and
apparel shops.
► It uses racks and fixtures to create an interesting and
out-of-the-ordinary type of store design without a high
cost.

MIXED FLOOR PLAN
► It incorporates the straight,diagonal and angular floor
plans to create the most functional store design.
► The layout moves traffic towards the walls and back of
the store.
