Transfer Lines and Similar Automated Manufacturing System

1. Transfer lines are automated production systems with multiple integrated workstations linked by a mechanized transport system to transfer parts between processing operations. 2. Conditions for applying transfer lines include high production demand, stable production design for damage-free transfer, and long product life for maximum accuracy. 3. Benefits include low labor costs, lower product costs, higher production rates, reduced production lead times, and minimized factory floor space.

Transfer
lines
Introduction
(transfer lines = ?)
The industries need considered for high
production of parts that require
multiple processing operation ,which is
done at physically integrated
workstation through mechanized
transport system. which forms automated
production lines (due to this case
transfer line or transfer machine is used).
Conditions for applying
Usually automated Those are..
production lines 1.High production demand.
requires heavy initial (for lowering production
capital investment time)
hence require 2.Stable production design.
appropriate (due to damage-less
conditions. transfer of material)
3.Long product life. (due to
max accuracy of transfer)
4.Multiple operation
If conditions satisfy then benefits
are…
1. Low labor content. (in workpiece transfer they
have no role)
2. Low product cost. (due to elimination of labor
work)
3. Higher production rates. (transfer lines are
faster than “human material transfer”)
4. Production lead time. (time before starting the
production)
5. Factory floor space is minimized. (optimization)
Fundamentals
 An automated production line consists of
multiple workstation that are linked
together by a work handling system that
transfers parts (part handling) from one
workstation to the next workstation.
Part handling
 Depending on the work part geometry a
transfer line may be utilize pallet ( single
head carrying multiple holdings) fixture for
part handling.
It is designed for
1. Fixture size of the part at precise locations.
2. Need of Accurate clamping.
 The palletized transfer line is sometimes
used to introduce in a transfer line that uses
pallet fixtures.
System configuration
(working system arrangement)
 System configuration actually is the Work
flow which can be take place in many
different form.
1. In-line = sequence of operation in straight
line arrangement.
2. Segmented in-line = two or more straight
line arrangement .
3. Rotary = work parts are fixed around the
periphery of circular work table.

of circular
work table.
Work part transfer mechanism
 The work parts transfer mechanism is actually
physical means through the workpart gets
travel during the operations. The respected
workpart transfer mechanism can be
synchronous or asynchronous.
1. Synchronous mech. = Traditional means of
moving parts in a transfer lines speed of
transfer remain constant & synchronization as
per the speed of operations.
2. Asynchronous mech. = transfer speed varies.
Advantage of Asynchronous
mechanism

1. Greater flexibility. (due to variable

speed)
2. Fewer pallet fixture required. (because it
is not much process dependent)
3. Easier to rearrange or expand the
production system. (due to flexibility)
Division of workpart transfer
 There are two main category of workpart
transfer.
1. Linear or Inline transport systems.
2. Rotary indexing mechanisms.
Line transfer system

 This system use powered roller conveyors,

belt conveyors, chain driven conveyors.
Rotary indexing mechanisms
 Several mechanisms are
available to provide the
rotational indexing
motion required in a dial
indexing machine.
 E.g. cam drive..
These are used to provide
an accurate and reliable
method of indexing a
rotary dial table.
Storage buffer
 A storage buffer in a production line is a
location where parts can be collected and
temporarily stored before proceeding to
downstream workstations. Storage buffer
can be manually operated or automated.
Reasons for using Storage buffer
1. To reduce the effect of station breakdowns.
(one station remain continued if other gets
down for repair)
2. To provide a bank of parts to supply the line.
(here parts can be manually fed to other
station)
3. To provide a place to put the output of the line.
4. To allow for curing time or other required delay
5. To smooth cycle time variations.(manual
purpose)
Control of the production line

 It’s a complex controlling process because

of number of sequential and simultaneous
activities that must be accomplished
during operation of the line.
Control function
 Due to this complexity the control on production
lines are divided into three basic control
functions those are..
1. Sequence control = the function of this control
is to coordinate the sequence of actions of the
transfer system and associated workstations.
2. Safety monitoring = this function ensures that
the production line does not operate in unsafe
condition.
3. Quality control = in this function, certain quality
attributes of the workparts are monitored .
Application of automated
production lines
They are extensively used in…..
 Sheet metal forming and cutting.

 Rolling mill operations.

 Spot welding of automobile car bodies.

Machining systems
Many applications of machining transfer
machines, both in-line and rotary
configurations, are found in the
automotive industry. Here is the various
multiple station machining systems.
1. Transfer lines
2. Rotary transfer machines.
Transfer lines
 In this the workstations containing
machining work heads are arranged in an
in-line an segmented in-line configuration
and parts are moved between station by
transfer mechanisms such as the walking
beam system. (in which parts are
synchronously lifted up from their
respective stations by a transfer beam and
moved one position ahead to the next
station).
Rotary transfer machines

 In this a horizontal circular worktable, on

which fixtures and work pieces are to be
processed , stationary work head are
located at the periphery the and the
worktable is given an indexing
arrangement so that at a specific process
the worktable is rotated through a specific
angle for machining that piece which is
hold by the workhead.
Finally

E.g.
 If railway lines are supposed to be the

Transfer Mechanisms then the railway

stations are part of System Configuration
and powering means to the engine is
something like the Machining System.
