Quadratic Functions (Quick Revision)

Quadratic Functions

General form: f ( x ) = ax 2 + bx + c .
Discriminant, d = b 2 − 4ac

Maximum and Minimum Values of Quadratic Functions

f ( x ) = ax 2 + bx + c , where a > 0 .
The function has a minimum point,
( x, y ) .
Minimum value = y

f ( x ) = − ax 2 + bx + c , where a < 0 .
The function has a maximum point,
( x, y ) .
Maximum value = y

Two ways to find maximum/minimum value

1. completing the square
2. differentiation (will be discussed later)

Graph Sketching

To draw a graph
1. Do completing the square to find the maximum/minimum point.
2. Refer to the coefficient of x 2 . If a > 0 , the curve is a smile-face. If a < 0 , the curve is
a sad-face.
3. Find the discriminant, b 2 − 4ac to determine the location of the graph.

Quadratic Inequalities

Quadratic inequality has two methods to solve.

1. graph sketching
2. number line
