Experimental Design Diagrams: Name Connor and Jerome

1) Two students, Connor and Jerome, conducted an experiment to determine how the amount of water in a 2-liter bottle affects the distance a water rocket travels. 2) They predicted that filling the bottle more would increase distance up to a certain point, after which there would not be enough air. 3) Their data showed distance increased from 1000ml to 1200ml of water, then decreased as water amount increased further. The maximum distance of 74m occurred at 1200ml. 4) Controlled variables were air pressure, launch angle, top bottle volume, wing design. Materials included bottles, cardboard, duct tape, and a launcher. 5) The procedure involved constructing the rocket, measuring water amounts

Question:
How Does the Amount of Water in the 2 liter affects how far the Rocket travels?

Prediction:
If you fill the 2 liter up more it will go further to a certain point, because if you fill it up
to far there will not be enough air.

Data Table:

The Distance The Rocket Travels Depends on the Amount of Water

Amount of Water Distance Traveled (Meters) Average
(ml) Distance (m)
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3
1000 51 m 55 m 32 m 46 m
1100 45 m 57 m 51 m
1200 67 m 62 m 93 m 74 m
1300 72 m 64 m 61 m 65 m
1400 49 m 47 m 51 m 49 m
1500 31 m 38 m 34 m

5 Controlled Variables:
1. 75 psi
2. angle of launch is 45º
3. 100 ml in top
4. wing length
5. 3 wings

Materials:
1. 2 liter bottle
2. 20oz bottle
3. card board
4. scissors
5. duct tape
6.launch space
7.water
8.rocket launch

Procedure:
1.Gather materials
2.Duct tape the two bottoms of the bottles together
3.Cut out of the cardboard 3 wings size 6x8 right triangles
4.Duct Tape them on evenly around the bigger bottle
5.Measure out amount of water in bottom bottle and record it going by 100 ml intervals
7. Then screw the cap on smaller/top bottle
8.Go to launch space
9.Get rocket launcher ready
10.Angle it at 45 degrees
10.Measure out 100ml of water and place it in the top bottle
11.Quickly place the Rocket on the launcher
12.Clamp the bottle on
13.Turn the Rocket launcher on
14.Wait till it is pumped up to 75psi
15.Pull string to release rocket
16.Measure how far it travels
17.Record Data
18.Repeat steps 10-17 for all your trials
19.Graph your data
20.Write a conclusion

Conclusion: As we increased the amount of water the distance went up to a certain point and
decreased again. The wings became wet on our first rocket which made the rocket not fly that
far. We fixed the wings and it went a lot farther.
