Experimental Design Diagrams: Name Spencer and Jason HR 8
The document describes an experiment to test how the number of wings on a rocket affects flight distance. It includes a question, prediction, data table for 3 and 4 wings, list of controlled variables, materials needed, and step-by-step procedure. The students predicted rockets with more wings would fly further due to increased spin and time in air. Their results showed rockets with 3 wings flew further than those with 4 wings, on average.

A. State your question
How will the amount of wings affect how far the rocket fly? B. Make a prediction. If we make the amount of wings larger then the rocket will fly further because it will spin and cause it to stay in the air longer. C. Create a data table Flight Distance Depends on Wing Size Number of Distance (meters) Average Wings Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Distance (meters) 3 88m 81m 78m 82.33m 4 74m 75m 78m 75.66m 5 Source: Spencer and Jason, May 2010 D. List 5 controlled variables Rocket weight, same bottles, same amount of duct tape, same material used for wings, same angle of flight, same amount of pressure used to shoot rocket. E. List the materials needed for experiment 2 liter bottle, 20oz bottle, duct tape, cardboard, caps, water, launcher F. Step by Step Procedure First grab a 2 liter bottle and a 20 oz bottle and duct-tape the bottoms together. Then cut 6 equal right triangle wings made of cardboard, with the lengths of 15x11. Then duct-tape the right triangles equally apart for each amount of wings. Also the same distance from the bottom of the 2 liter bottle (6 cm) Once you have the rocket all together, fill the 20oz bottle with 100ml of water with cap on, and fill the 2 liter bottle with 1000ml of water without the cap. Then place the rocket on the launcher at 75 psi and launch the rocket at a 65 degree angle three times and record the data.
Conclusion: If you have 3 wings you will fly further than the controlled amount.
