D Istan Ce Depends On The Cap (On/off) Caponoroff D Istance (M) Avera Ge Trial1 Trial 2 Capon Capoff S Ource: Kaylie and Julie

The document describes an experiment to test how rocket design factors affect flight distance. The experiment tests whether fin shape (triangle vs. heart) or having the bottle cap on/off impacts distance. The hypothesis is that a heart-shaped fin or keeping the cap on will increase distance by improving aerodynamics. The experiment controls variables and outlines materials, procedure, and data collection to measure the effect of fin shape and cap presence on rocket distance.

Experimental Design Diagram Julie Walters and Kaylie Mast 4th Hour

Question: Does that shape of the fins make a difference in how far the rocket flies? Also, does the cap
being on make a difference?

Hypothesis: If the fin shape is changed to a heart, then the rocket will farther because the heart is aero-
dynamic. Also, If the cap is on the bottle, then the rocket will go farther because the wind won't get
caught in the bottle.

Distance depends on Fin Shape

Controlled Variables:
– the same bottles
– same amount of air pressure
– same amount of water in top
– same amount of water in bottom
– same launcher

Materials needed:
– a 2L pop bottle and a 20 oz bottle (with caps)
– cardboard for the fins (and something to cut out the fins)
– duct tape
– water
– launcher
– air compressor
– meter sticks
– graduated cylinder
– place to launch the rocket (big space)

Procedure:
1. gather materials
2. have someone hold the 20 oz bottle and 2L bottle bottom to bottom
3. duct tape them together
4. cut out fins
5. duct tape your fins to the large bottle 2 ½ inches from the mouth
6. fill the top with 100 ml and the bottom with 250 ml (put your finger in the top if no cap to keep
water in until right before you launch it)
7. set up the launcher
8. fill the bottle is compressed air (75 psi)
9. take your finger out of the top bottle if necessary
10. launch the rocket
11. wait until it lands and measure the distance in meters
12. record your data
13. repeat steps 4-13 depending on the data you need
14. make a conclusion and graph your data
