Experimental Design Diagrams: Name HR

The document describes an experiment to test how the angle of trajectory affects the flight distance of a water rocket. Three angles were tested (15°, 45°, and 75°) with three trials conducted for each angle. The 45° angle resulted in the greatest average distance of 65 meters, while the 15° angle had the shortest average distance of 1.7 meters. The conclusion is that smaller and larger angles result in shorter flight distances, supporting the hypothesis, as rockets launched at 15° and 75° angles tend to travel straight up/down or into the ground more quickly.

A. What affect with the angle of trajectory have on the distance of the rocket flight?
B. If we change the angle of trajectory to 15°, 45° (Control), and 75°, then the flight
distance will change because when the angles are very small, the rocket will go
straight up, straight down and not very far, and when they are very big, the rocket will
hit the ground sooner.

C. We will keep controlled: the shape of the cardboard wings, the size of the cardboard
wings, the amount of air pressure in rocket (75 psi) , the amount of water in the rocket
(100ml in top, 250 ml in bottom), and we will keep the cap on for all trials.
D. Materials-
Rocket: 2 pop bottles, duct tape, water, cardboard wings (6x4)
Rocket Launcher
Air Compressor (75 psi)
Measurement Stick (Meters)
A Large Open Area to Conduct the Experiment

E. Procedure-
1. Gather all materials needed
2. Construct a rocket by duct taping a small 20 oz. Pop bottle on top of a 2 Liter bottle. You
then tape on the cardboard wings (Right triangles 6inx4in).
3. Fill the rocket with water (250 ml in bottom bottle, and 100 ml in the top bottle)
4. Fill with 75 psi of air in the bottom bottle.
5. As soon as you can, release it.

6. Measure (m) and record your data
7. Repeat steps 3-6 until you have completed all 3 angles of trajectory (15°, 45°, 75°) and 3
trials of each angle.
8. Clean up

F. Conclusion
Our data supports our hypothesis because we thought that the when the angles were very
big and very small, they would not go as far as the control (45°). When it was at 15 degrees,
it went straight up and then straight back down basically. When the angle was 75°, the rocket
went straight and then into the ground.
If we were to do this experiment over, we would do our experiment inside so that the would would not
be a factor of the flight distance. We would also want to fix the rocket after every fight. When the
rocket hit the ground, it tended to become a little squished, and they may have affected the flight
distance.
