Functions (Quick Revision)

Set

1. Relations of two sets can be represented by

i. arrow diagram
ii. ordered pair
iii. graph

2. Types of relations
i. one-to-one
ii. one-to-many
iii. many-to-one
iv. many-to-many

Functions

1. Properties of functions
i. one-to-one relation
ii. one-to-many relation
iii. not all elements in codomain are images.

Absolute Value Functions

1. The modulus symbol ( ) appears.

2. All the integers (either positive or negative) inside the modulus will turn into positive
values.

Composite Functions

1. Composite function is a combination of two functions.

2. Properties of composite functions
i. fg ( x ) = f  g ( x ) 
ii. fg ( x ) ≠ gf ( x )
iii. f 2 = ff , f 3 = f 2 f
= ff 2
= fff
3. Three different types of questions will be asked
ii. Given two functions, let say f and g, find the composite function (can be fg or gf).
iii. Given a composite function and a function, let say fg and f, find the function g.

(g is “inside”)
iv. Given a composite function and a function, let say gf and f, find the function g.
(g is “outside")

Inverse Functions

1. Inverse function is the functions that direct to the opposite direction of normal
function.
2. Properties of inverse function
−1 −1
i. ( fg ) = g −1 f −1 and ( gf ) = f −1 g −1
2 −1 2
ii. (f ) = ( f −1 )
iii. ff −1 ( x ) = f −1 f ( x ) = x
3. Always apply this while answering questions involve inverse function

Let y = f ( x)
f −1 ( y ) = x
