Dinosaurs: their time period, difference between a


herbivore and a carnivore, what happened to them
To give students better knowledge of prehistoric dinosaurs
using a PowerPoint lesson
Students will be able to better understand the term
extinct and discuss various theories of dinosaur
extinction. Students will learn about multiple different
dinosaurs. Students will also discuss the differences
between herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs and be
able to identify them through practice of flashcards.
Students will complete My Pet Dinosaur project through
use of research, creative writing, and art.
PowerPoint presentation, book: If The Dinosaurs Came
Back by Bernard Most
Reading If The Dinosaurs Came Back to introduce the
topic. Follow up with asking students of their background
knowledge on dinosaurs. Start PowerPoint and play
attention grabber trailer clip from Disneys Dinosaur
movie.
1. Teacher will introduce topic by reading If The
Dinosaurs Came Back by Bernard Most.
2. Teacher will ask students what background
knowledge they have of dinosaurs (Do they still
exist? What happened to them? What is a
carnivore? What dinosaurs do you know about?
What movies or books have you seen/read with
dinosaurs in them?)
3. Teacher will begin PowerPoint presentation
4. Teacher will play attention grabber trailer clip
from Disneys Dinosaur and ask students if they
recognized any dinosaurs from the clip and know
what they are called (potential answers:
pterodactyl, triceratops, carnotaurus, iguanodon)
5. Teacher will continue PowerPoint presentation
6. Teacher will ask students if they have any questions
(open discussion about dinosaurs)
7. Students will partner up and practice reviewing and
identifying types of dinosaurs through use of
flashcards.
8. Teacher will assign My Pet Dinosaur assignment to

Students will be assigned a partner and flashcards will be


passed out to each couple that have a picture of a
dinosaur on one side, and on the other side their name
and whether they are a herbivore or carnivore to practice
identifying different dinosaurs.
Ask students what they have learned about dinosaurs and
what questions they still may have.

My Pet Dinosaur Assignment


1. Students will each choose from a provided list of
dinosaurs to do their project on.
2. Teacher will take students to library and computer
lab to do research on their assigned dinosaur.
3. Students will write a 4 paragraph paper about their
pet dinosaur and draw a picture to go with it.
Paper will include:
1. Type of dinosaur (and what student names it, ex.
Terry the Pterodactyl)
2. Carnivore or herbivore (student will discuss what
they will feed their pet dinosaur)
3. Environment/time period their dinosaur lived in
4. Must include 3 fun facts about their dinosaur
This lesson could connect to:
1. Science-Different environments in which Dinosaurs
lived (some in the ocean, some in the jungle, etc.)
2. History-Exploring prehistoric time periods
3. English- Writing a creative, non-fiction paper on My
Pet Dinosaur
