Substitution Lesson Plan

This lesson plan outlines a math lesson for 8th grade students on solving systems of linear equations using the substitution method. The lesson objectives are for students to demonstrate solving systems of equations using substitution with 80% accuracy after instruction, practice on iPads, and an exit ticket assessment. The lesson plan details New York State math standards, materials, instructional strategies including direct instruction, partner practice on iPads, and an exit ticket. Adaptations for different students and assessments are provided.

Solving a System of Equations Algebraically using Substitution

Ex #1: y = x 2
y + 4x = 13
1) Solve one of the equations
for x or y.
2) Substitute the expression
into the other equation.
3) Solve the equation.
4) Solve for the other
variable by substituting
into either original.
5) Check solution in both
original equations.

Ex #2: y + 1 = 3x
x=y-2

Exit Ticket
Solve the following systems of equations by the substitution method.
1. y = x 1
3y + 2x = 12

2. x 5 = 3y
y 2x = 10

Substitution Method HW
1)

y = 4x - 28
y = 2x + 10

2)

x - 2y = -2
y = 2x + 4

3)

x = y + 20
x + y = 84

4)

3x + 4y = 15
y=x+9

5) y = 6x -11
-2x 3y = -7

6) 2x 3y = -1
y=x1

7) y = -2
5x 4y = -3

8) -7x -2y = -13

x 2y = 11

9) -5x + y = -2
-3x + 6y = -12

10) -3x 8y = 20
-5x + y = 19
