What is a Database ?
A database is a collection of information that is
organized so that it can easily be accessed,
managed, and updated. In one
view, databases can be classified according to
types of content: bibliographic, full-text,
numeric, and images.

The Police National Computer (PNC) is a computer system used extensively by law enforcement
organisations across the United Kingdom.
It went live in 1974 and now has several databases available 24 hours a day, giving access to information of
national and local significance to the public.
From October 2009, the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) stated that there were over 9.2
million (personal) records, 52 million driver records, 55 million vehicle records and that 185million
transactions were mad in the last 12months.
The PNC is a computer system used greatly by law enforcement organisations across the United Kingdom.
There are 4 databases, which are called Names File, Vehicle File , Property File , Drivers File.
The Names file allows you to see a large amount of information about people who have been convicted,
cautioned or recently arrested. The Vehicle files Provides details on the registered keeper of a motor
vehicle, as well as storing other information from the DVLA as to the vehicle's status (Tax Expired, V23
Submitted, Stolen, Chassis Number, Engine Number etc.) The Property files will allow us to see types
of stolen and found property's, this can be placed onto the PNC system. The Drivers File contains
information on 48 million people who either hold a driving licence or are disqualified from holding one. The
record will contain information relating to test passes, endorsements and the licence entitlements.
