Sand Cushion: 1. Introduction

This document discusses using shredded waste tires as reinforcement material in sand cushions to improve the performance of foundations built on soft clay soils. An experimental model was constructed to evaluate the behavior of a single strip footing on soft clay reinforced with different sand cushion configurations. Tests were conducted to analyze the effects of varying the sand cushion thickness, position of randomly distributed tire shreds reinforcement zones, and depth of reinforcement zones. Results indicated that using tire shreds in sand cushions enhanced the footing's performance by increasing the ultimate load capacity. Thicker sand cushions provided greater improvement. Reinforcement effectiveness decreased with increasing sand cushion thickness. Reinforcement near the top of the sand cushion had a more significant impact.
