The Power Plants and Their Capacity in Turkey

The document summarizes Turkey's electricity generation capacity in 2015. It states that natural gas power plants accounted for the largest share of electricity production that year at 259 TWh. Hydroelectric and coal power plants also contributed significantly. The capacity and locations of Turkey's major power plants are then listed, including geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind, thermal, nuclear and other non-renewable sources. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are increasing their share in recent years.

THE POWER PLANTS AND THEIR CAPACITY IN TURKEY
Electricity and energy have a strategic importance in the world. All
countries are looking for ways to produce own energy that they need in order to
reduce to dependency on foreign energy and protect the national interests.
Although, Turkey is located in a good area in respect to closeness to many
different natural resources, the electrical energy generated in Turkey is not
sufficient to the need. However, in last 25 years, many investments are made for
dams and power plants.
Turkey generated electricity about 259 TWh in 2015. 1 The distribution of
this generation according to resources is given in Fig1. As can be seen from the
graph, the largest share of electricity produced in 2015is natural gas power
plants. After that the coal and hydroelectric power plants comes. In recent years,
the importance of renewable clean energy sources such as wind, solar and
geothermal power plants are, also, increasing their share.

Fig. 1 The distribution of electricity generation of Turkey in 2015.

This distribution is changing in years for various reasons. For example,
hydroelectric power generated in 2012 dropped significantly due to the drought
occurred in that year. Insufficiency raised for this reason, is filled by natural gas
and thermal power plants. Another example is that in recent years, production

rate of natural gas plants have decreased due to the technical failures at natural
gas pipelines of Iran. Consequently, production rates of hydroelectric and coal
plants.2
The power plants in Turkey and their ratings are given in the list below. 3
