LINGUISTIC STUDIES OF KAPAMPANGAN


Kapampangan belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian family of languages. In 1946 Zoilo
Hilario, a Kapampangan member of the Institute of National Language, advocated
the adoption of an orthography based on Tagalog. In effect, he proposed a series of
substitutions; C, when soft, with S (cinto to sinku; C, when hard, with K (carin to

THE FOLKLORE
The pre-Spanish literature of the Kapampangans survives exclusively in the folklore.
However, no surviving record of this foklore, primary because of its oral nature and
partly because of spanish indifference to indigenous literature. Only in the present
century have scholars transcribes this literature into written form.

The primary principal source of foklore in the form of ethnographic studies on the
Kapampangans entitled Ethnography of the Pampangan People which constitutes
set 5 of the Philippine Ethnographic Series. The set consists of 120 papers on
Kapampangan folklore, socialcustoms, and beliefs, which were written by Beyers
students during the years 1918.
RICARDO C. GALANG another major source of data on kapampangan folklore. His
ethnographic study originally submitted to the Philippine Studies program at the
University of Chicago in 1941.
ALEJANDRINO Q. PEREZ: Pampango Folklore. Perezs article records48 riddles, 99
proverbs, 30 folksongs classified in according to 8 different types.
VIOLETA CORTEZ Isang Masusing Pag-aaral ng mga Kaalamang bayan sa lalawigan
ng Pampanga, Cortezs thesis collects 14 place legends, 6 folk tales, 26 folksongs as
well as several customs and beliefs. Perez and Cortez are the recent year

The history of Kapampangan Journalism officially began in 1905 with the publication
of EL IMPARCIAL/ING EMANGABIRAN (The Non-Partisan), a four-page bilingual tabloid
published three times a week in Bacolor Pampanga
Aurelio Tolentino Publisher of the newpaper
Crisostomo Soto and Felix Galura were the editors for the kapampangan section.
Jose Maria Rivera was the 1st editor for Spanish section of the paper.
In 1912 publication was transferred in Manila. Justice Jose Gutierrez David joined the
editorial board.
A new phase in the history of kapampangan journalism began in 1917 with the
publication of 2 newspaper: Pampanga Magazine rekindled interest in Kapampangan
Culture in New Millennium:

BASULTO is a kind of composition that contains vague, metaphorical or allusive
words familiar to herdsmen pasturing their carabaos, cows and goats. Ex. Tinanam
kung Kamantigi, karin pu kekami
GOSO has definite moral message and slow tempo, characteristics that can easily
differentiate it from the other forms of folksongs. It is sung to the accompaniment of
violins, guitars and tamborines on the eve of All Saints Day by youth groups going
from house to house.
PAMURI is a variant of the Kapampangan love song derived from buri which means
like.
example: aruy katimyas na nitang dalaga.
Duplo - is of a spanish origin and is a poetical game amounting to a contest in both
poetic powers of expression and general cultural knowledge usually held during
literary occasions and wakes.
Diparan are folkloric aphorisms or proverbs which embody well known truths or
common facts by experience or observation.
6. Tumaila are songs sung by the mother to their children when babies go to sleep.
7. Polosa is a unique kapampangan style of singing in which singer picks bits of
information from his listenerss background and looks. No Newspapers appeared in
Pampanga from 1948 to 1957.

Fr. Diego Bergano - author of the first Pampango Grammar book, first published in
Sampaloc in l729 and then in l821. The rare book (l821 edition) is in the Cordell
Collection at Indiana State University. ( Ernie Turla ). 8. Sapatya the word Sapatya
must have been derived from the word Zapateado, a Spanish dance introduced in
the Philippines by the early Spanish settlers. The version described here is from
barrio Manibaug, Porac, Pampanga. This time the verse is sung and the participants
dance to the beat of their castanets.

Juan Crisostomo Soto - He is the father of kapampangan literature and he was able
to write many zarsuelas, poems, essays, short stories and 50 plays and also known
as Crissot 8. Ing malulumud pataram man calawatan na. (A drowning man will
clutch even a blade.) 9. Ing itu balican ne ing labug na. (A mudfish always retraces
its path.) 10. Panayan mu caring anac mu ing depatan mu cang tata mu. (Expect

your children to treat you the way you treated your father.)
