Assignment 1

This document contains an assignment for an engineering dynamics course, with 3 questions regarding range of velocities for souvenir balls to land in a specified area, acceleration and tension for two blocks on an incline, and speed of a collar sliding on a rod after being displaced by an applied force. The questions are accompanied by diagrams to illustrate the physics problems.

NT142/3 - ENGINEERING DYNAMICS (SEMESTER 2 - 2015/16 ACADEMIC SESSION)

ASSIGNMENT 1
Question 1
At halftime of a football game souvenir balls are thrown to the spectators with a velocity v o .
Determine the range of values of v o if the balls are to land between points B and C.

Question 2
The two blocks shown in Figure 3 are originally at rest. Neglecting the masses of the pulleys and the
effect of friction in the pulleys and between the blocks and the incline, determine (a) the acceleration
of each block, (b) the tension in the cable.

Question 3
The collar has a mass of 30 kg and is supported on the rod having a coefficient of kinetic
friction k = 0.4. The attached spring has an unstretched length of 0.2 m and a stiffness k = 50
N/m. Determine the speed of the collar after the applied force F = 200 N caused it to be
displaced s = 1.5 m from point A. When s = 0 the collar is held at rest.
