ILLUSTRATION PROJECT
Your Task:
One of the many jobs that are available to an artist is that of the illustrator. An illustrator is hired to work
with an author to create visual images or animations for a story. You will be provided with an except from a
story and using one of the mediums of photography, photoshop, or stop motion, flash animation, your
assignment will be to create a corresponding visual image or animation.

Rough Work:
1. Read the story excerpt.
2. Ask your self what are the strongest and/or the most important images? List these images
3. Make rough sketches in pencil in your sketch book.
4. Be sure to research the appearance of objects before you render them.
5. Consider the various compositional devices explored in class that are necessary to create an effectively
designed image.
6. Make use of the whole picture plane in your design. Zoom in or crop your object to fill the frame.
7. Decide what medium would be best to create your artwork.
8. Think carefully about the colours that you choose to use in your art work. Pay close attention to the
power of colour harmonies and the effect of complementary colour pairings.
9. Make sure that your art work reflects the qualities of light (highlight, halftone, shadow core, reflected light
and cast shadow) as they are used to describe a form.
