Body System: Cardiovascular

Structures (parts, organs) Function(s) (job/role)

Heart
Blood Vessels
Arteries
Arterioles
Capillaries
Veins
Venules
Blood

Disorders/Malfunctions
(diseases) (how will the body work
differently?)

Heart- Pumps blood

throughout the body to the
lungs and other systems.

Leukemias- Extra production of

white blood cells. Over production
to the point of system failure.

Blood Vessels- A tubular

network throughout the body
allowing the heart to pump
blood throughout the body.
Includes arteries, capillaries,
and veins.

Heart Attack- A heart attack occurs

when something causes the heart
to stop beating altogether.

Arteries- Carry oxygen-rich

blood away from the heart.
Arterioles-Bring oxygen to
blood cells. Thinner than a
hair.
Capillaries- Collect Co2 and
other waste to return to the
veins.
Veins- Carry oxygen-poor
blood back to the heart.
Venules- Allows deoxygenated
blood from the capillary beds
to return to the veins. Many
venules reunite to form a
vein.
Blood- It transports nutrients
(oxygen) throughout the body
and takes out wastes (carbon
dioxide) with blood.

Coronary Artery Disease- A result of

plaque build up in the Coronary
Arteries (atherosclerosis). It blocks
blood flow making the heart starved
of nutrients needed to help it pump
properly.
Vascular Disease- Any condition
that affects the Cardiovascular
System; for example, Aneurysms,
or blood disease.
Arrhythmias- Abnormal heart
rhythms (doesnt mean your heart
beats too fast or too slow) which
can be dangerous and safe. Can
make you Dizzy and faint. Give you
chest pains or fatigues.
Blood Clots- Blockages in veins
and arteries preventing or slowing
blood flow.
Palpitations- The awareness of
heart muscle contractions. Hard
beats, fast beats, irregular beats,
and/or pauses. Can be caused by
Arrhythmias.
