9 - Completing The Square

This document provides examples and exercises for completing the square to solve quadratic equations. It introduces the process of finding the value of c that makes a quadratic trinomial a perfect square, then writing the trinomial as the square of a binomial expression. Students are guided through examples of using this method to solve equations of the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0. They are then given 15 practice problems applying the technique of completing the square to solve quadratic equations.

x + bx , follow these steps.

Complete the Square To complete the square for a quadratic expression of the form
1. Find

b
.
2

2. Square

b
.

Example 1: Find the value of c that makes

x 2 + 22x + c a perfect square trinomial.
Then write the trinomial as the square of a
binomial.
Step 1

b = 22;

Step 2

Step 3

c = 121

2

Original equation

2

x 2 4x 12 = 0
= 11

x 2 4x = 12

= 121

The trinomial is x 2 + 22x + 121, which can

be written as (x+ 11)2 .

4x 12 is not a perfect square.

Add 12 to each side.

x 2 4x + 4 = 12 + 4

Since

4
2

()

= 4, add 4 to each

side.

(x2)2 = 16
x 2 = 4
x = 6 or x = 2

Example 2: Solve 2 x 2 8x 24 = 0 by

x2

Divide each side by 2.

Factor the square.
