6.5 Data Transmission-Modes and Rates: Remember

The document discusses data transmission modes, rates, and internet service providers. It defines data transmission as moving information from one space to another. The three transmission modes are simplex for one-directional data, half duplex for bidirectional but not simultaneous, and full duplex for simultaneous bidirectional. Baud rate refers to signal events per second while bits per second counts bits transmitted. Broadband can split bandwidth into smaller bands, unlike baseband. The document instructs to investigate and compare costs and services of dial-up and broadband internet providers.

5 Data Transmission- Modes and Rates

Remember
1. Define the term `data transmission'.
2. Describe the three modes of data transmission.
3. Explain what is meant by baud rate'.
Think
4. Explain the difference between baud rate and bps.
5. Distinguish between baseband and broadband.
Investigate
6. Investigate at least five Internet service providers which you
could use in your home, including dial-up and broadband services.
Compile a report comparing their services and costs. In your
report, compare the advantages, disadvantages and costs of dial-
up access and broadband (cable orADSL).

Remember
1. In simple terms, data transmission is the act of moving any
kind of information from one space to another.
2. Data Transmission modes
Simplex- in a simplex data mode data can travel in one
direction only, from sender to receiver, no other way. This
mode is used in radio and TV.
Half Duplex- in half duplex data transmission mode, data can
travel in both directions but not at the same time, the sender
and receiver must take in turns.
Full Duplex- this mode allows data to travel both directions
at the same time simultaneously. The current telephone
system is using a full duplex.
3. Baud rate is the number of distinct signal events or timing
intervals in a second.

Think
4. Baud rate is the number of distinct signal events or timing
intervals in a second. Bits per second (bps) are a count of
the number of bits transmitted each second.
5. When only one link uses the available bandwidth, the link is
known as baseband. When the single bandwidth can be split
into many smaller separate bands the link is known as
broadband. Broadband links can be more useful for networks
than baseband.
