INT. ERIKAS HOUSE -- DAY

OPENING SHOTS OF FAMILY PHOTOS. Assorted.
INT. ERIKAS KITCHEN -- DAY
ERIKA JONES, curious and naive, sits at the table with
JENNIFER JONES, a very young single mother of one who runs a
daycare. Jennifer is making lunch and Erika sits quietly
playing with her phone.
ERIKA
Mom, can you drive me to school
tomorrow? Its gonna be cold I
really dont want to walk.
JENNIFER
No honey, sorry. I have work you
know that.
ERIKA
(Annoyed)
Are you serious?
Jennifer shrugs -- Sorry!
ERIKA
(Mumbling)
If you had stayed with dad maybe
things would be a little easier
around here.
JENNIFER
Erika. Dont be like that. Its
much more complicated than you
think.
ERIKA
(Sarcastic)
Sure.
There is a knock on the door.
JENNIFER
Thats probably Sharon. Ill be
back at five. Love you.
Jennifer grabs her bag and begins putting on her coat. Erika
gets up from her seat.

ERIKA
(Walking to the door)
I still dont know why you force me
to take piano lessons, none of my
friends do!
JENNIFER
Stop complaining. Youll thank me
someday. Bye Sweety.
Jennifer Leaves through the side door. Erika opens the front
door and DUSTIN, a young attractive man, stands in front of
her.
ERIKA
Hey Sharo-(Realizing)
Oh... Youre not Sharon.
DUSTIN
Hi Erika, Im Dustin. Sharon
couldnt make it today so Im
substituting. Is that okay?
ERIKA
Um... Yeah thats fine. Come on in.
(Letting him in)
You can leave your shoes over here
and you can give your jacket to me.
DUSTIN
Awesome, thanks.
Erika takes his coat and puts it in the living room.
ERIKA
Oh, the piano is in the corner of
the room on your right. Its not a
grand but it has a good sound so...
yeah.
DUSTIN
Alright then, lets get started.
Dustin pulls up a second chair to the piano and Erika sits
on the stool, properly placed and ready to play. Dustin
pulls out a piece of music and Erika starts to play it.

3.

INT. PIANO ROOM -- DAY

Dustin is watching Erika play the piece he has in front of
her. She finishes flawlessly.
DUSTIN
Wow. Youre a fast learner.
Erika smiles at him.
DUSTIN
Alright lets try this one.
He reaches in his bag and pulls out a song about love.
ERIKA
(groaning)
Ugh. Lies.
DUSTIN
(Confused)
The notes?
ERIKA
The context! Love doesnt exist. If
it did I would have a father and my
family wouldnt be so broken. Can
we work on something else?
Dustin stares at her with curious eyes.
ERIKA
(Realizing how crazy she
sounds)
Oh my god. Im so sorry. That was
way too much personal information.
DUSTIN
Its fine. Really. But where is
your dad? If you dont mind me
asking.
ERIKA
My mom kicked him out and they got
a divorce. I dont know where he
is. I dont even know who he is.
DUSTIN
Sometimes love isnt about staying
with the one you care about. Its
about knowing when to let them go.

ERIKA
What do you mean?
DUSTIN
Okay. When I was young, around
seventeen or something, I dated
this girl.
EXT. PARK (2001) -- DAY
YOUNG JENNIFER, a beautiful seventeen year old girl, is
sitting with YOUNG DUSTIN, an equally as handsome seventeen
year old boy, on a bench. They look lovingly into each
others eyes.
DUSTIN (V.O)
She was everything I could have
wanted in a woman. Beautiful,
smart, genuine and selfless. We
were completely in love.
They get up from the bench and walk hand in hand out of the
park.
DUSTIN (V.O)
We moved a little too fast and she
ended up getting pregnant.
INT. PIANO ROOM -- DAY
ERIKA
WHAT?!
DUSTIN
I know, I know. But theres more to
the story. Dont worry.
He smiles at Erika and she smiles back and gestures for him
to continue.
DUSTIN (V.O)
Anyways...
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY (2001) -- DAY
Young Jennifer stands at her locker putting books in her
bag. Young Dustin spots her.

DUSTIN (V.O)
I was so scared. I eventually had
to tell my parents and they flipped
out, and I was not ready to be a
father. I told her to talk to her
parents and tell me what they said
in the morning.
YOUNG DUSTIN
(Scared)
Hey, so did you talk to your
parents?
She nods.
YOUNG DUSTIN
What did they say?
YOUNG JENNIFER
(Nervous)
You first.
YOUNG DUSTIN
(Pause)
They are totally against it. Ive
lost their trust completely and I
dont think Im ever going to earn
that back. But we can still do
this!
She sighs and touches his face.
YOUNG JENNIFER
Dustin. Were too young to start a
family.
YOUNG DUSTIN
No we arent! I can start giving
piano lessons in my spare time.
Instead of College, we can rent an
apartment and start a life
together. We can do it, I know we
can.
YOUNG JENNIFER
(Smiling at him)
I love you so much.
He smiles back.
YOUNG JENNIFER
But we cant do this on our own.
(Off his look)

YOUNG JENNIFER (contd)

I know your family doesnt approve
of this, but mine does. They are
willing to help me through this and
take care of me. They want me to
have this baby.
Young Dustin is heartbroken. He cant speak. He is too
distraught over what he has just heard.
YOUNG JENNIFER
You have talent Dustin. You cant
just give that up.
YOUNG DUSTIN
What are you saying?
YOUNG JENNIFER
Im offering you an out. Take it.
YOUNG DUSTIN
I dont want an out, I want to be
with you and take care of you and
make a family.
YOUNG JENNIFER
I know. But if you start this new
family now, youre going to lose
your old one. Im not going to let
you do that. I will be fine. And so
will you. Take the out.
There is a long silence among the two teenagers.
DUSTIN (V.O)
And I did.
ERIKA (PRE-LAP)
You took the out?
INT. PIANO ROOM -- DAY
Dustin and Erika are still at the piano. Her expression
makes it obvious that she is very interested in his story.
DUSTIN
(Nodding)
It was the hardest thing Ive ever
had to do.

ERIKA
I bet it was harder for her.
DUSTIN
Exactly.
Erika seems confused at first, but then she realizes what
hes trying to say.
DUSTIN
She let me go. We were only
seventeen and she was wiser than
anyone I knew. She was right to do
what she did. She loved me and
instead of selfishly keeping me to
herself, she let me have a life.
ERIKA
So did you stay in touch with her?
DUSTIN
Yeah, in some ways we did. Anyways,
were out of time so Ive gotta go.
Ill leave this piece with you in
case you want to learn it for
Sharon when she gets back to work.
Dustin and Erika get up from their seats.
INT/EXT. ERIKAS DOORWAY AND PORCH -- DAY
She grabs his coat and he puts on his shoes. She watches him
as he walks down the front steps to get to his car. He
drives away.
Erika walks back into the piano room and sits at the stool.
She starts to play the piece he gave her. Its beautiful.
One sheet of the piece falls down and Erika bends to pick it
up. She notices a wallet under the chair. She picks it up,
discovering that it has "Dustin Ross" written on it in pen.
She walks to the phone and reaches for it. She opens the
wallet to try to find his business card, so she can reach
him.
However, upon opening the wallet, she sees a picture of a
mother and a child. She stops abruptly and looks closer.
ERIKA
(Realizing)
Oh my god.

She rushes to her cabinet and pulls out a family album. She
feverishly flips through the pages until she spots it. The
exact same picture in Dustins wallet. A picture of her
mother with her, the day she was born.
Erika holds the two pictures up side by side. Identical.
She has just found her true father.
Exeunt.
