This document provides a three step process to convert between Stormer Viscometer Krebs units and viscosity cup drain time measurements. Step 1 involves using a chart to convert Krebs units to centipoise viscosity. Step 2 uses another chart to convert the centipoise value to centistokes. Step 3 determines the drain time in seconds for a viscosity cup using the centistoke value and another conversion chart. The conversion is only accurate for Newtonian or near-Newtonian materials.

CONVERSION between STORMER VISCOMETER KREBS UNITS
and VISCOSITY CUP DRAIN TIME
THREE STEP CONVERSION PROCESS
Step 1: Knowing the Krebs value, convert this value to Centipoise viscosity. On the attached Krebs Units to Centipoise conversion chart, read vertically from the known Krebs unit to the curve and then horizontally to the left to the Centipoise value. Record this value. Step 2: Convert the Centipoise value for the test material in question to Centistokes. On the attached Centipoise - Centistoke conversion chart, locate the Centipoise value from Step 1 on the vertical scale. Read horizontally to the right from this value to the Weight Per Gallon or Specic Gravity line, estimating values between lines, applicable to the test material in question. From this intersection read directly downward to the horizontal Centistoke scale and record this value. Step 3: Determine the drain time in seconds for the viscosity cup in question from the Centistoke value from Step 2. For this conversion, refer to the Gardco Viscosity Cup Equivalent Chart or the conversion chart furnished with each Gardco produced viscosity cup. Only viscosity cups accommodating the highest range of viscosity are satisfactory for this conversion as most Krebs measurements are in the range from 500 to 1400 Centistokes. For satisfactory results, do not use a viscosity cup above its recommended top limit. This conversion is accurate only for Newtonian or near Newtonian materials. Viscosity of materials that deviate greatly from these true liquids may not be seen the same by the Stormer and viscosity cup methods of measurement.
