Difference Between Elastic Design and Plastic Design

1) Elastic design determines the maximum bending moment based on the elastic section modulus (Ze), which is the point where the extreme fiber yields elastically but other fibers remain below their yield stress. 2) Plastic design determines the maximum bending moment based on the plastic section modulus (Zp), which is the point where the entire section yields plastically and a plastic hinge forms. 3) The shape factor, which is the ratio of Zp/Ze, has no physical meaning and is just used for computations. It is higher for shapes like rectangles and lower for I-beams.
