Edma262 Mathematics

Dion, a Grade 4 student, has reached several growth points in mathematics according to an assessment. He can count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to a given target and read, write, interpret, and order three-digit numbers. Dion uses strategies like doubles and known facts for addition and subtraction and can model multiplication situations. The report notes Dion can count objects one by one and forwards/backwards with 1, 2, and 3-digit numbers. He can also distinguish more and less. Dion reads large numbers, uses counting and derived strategies for addition/subtraction, and showed skip counting and trial/error for multiplication questions.

Growth point (in words)

Given a non-zero starting point, can

count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to a given
target
Can read, write, interpret and order
three-digit numbers
Given an addition or subtraction
problem, strategies such as doubles,
commutatively, adding 10, tens facts,
and other known facts are evident
Uses the multiplicative structure of the
situation to find the answer when all
objects are modelled or perceived.

Report:
Dion can count over 20 and more objects, one at a time. He is able to count
forwards and backwards without breaking sequence with 1-digit, 2-digit, and
3-digit numbers. He is able to count on from zero by 2s, 5s, and 10s. He is
also able to distinguish one more or one less with any given number. He is
able to read up to six-digit numbers, for example with the calculator task he
was able to reach the limit of the calculator and read each number correctly.
Dion is able to subitise numbers (recognise the number associated to the
pattern). Dion is also able to use strategies such as the count on method, and
the basic/derived strategy, to work out addition and subtraction sums
provided. When asked for how he worked out a certain sum he explained how
he did it thorough using a number line to help his thinking. Many of the sums
he was able to work out on his head quite quickly. Dion was able to show
multiplicative strategy through skip counting of the bears in question 29. Dion
showed understanding in the trial and error when trying to work out and equal
amount of teddies for each mat in question 30.
