Stats Project

Vanessa Reveles conducted a study to determine if eating popcorn affects a person's enjoyment of a movie. She surveyed people leaving a movie theater, asking them to rate how much they enjoyed the movie on a scale of 1 to 5, and whether they ate popcorn. The results showed that those who ate popcorn had more polarized opinions, with 59% strongly disliking the movie, while those without popcorn had more moderate responses. Statistical analysis of the mean, median and other measures also suggested popcorn eaters liked the movie less. Therefore, the study concluded that popcorn does not significantly impact a movie's enjoyability.

Stats Project
DOES EATING POPCORN REALLY AFFECT THE ENJOYMENT OF
A MOVIE?
I have always wondered why do we eat popcorn when we go to the movies? People say
that popcorn makes movies better, some people dont even like popcorn, and some people dont
mind it. I wanted to see if there was a correlation between the enjoyment of a movie with and
without popcorn.

Step 1:
My population was people at the movie theater, my control group were people who dont
eat popcorn or didnt like it so that wouldnt change their movie experience compared to those
who do eat popcorn.

Step 2:
I went to the movies closest to my house and chose to ask people who had just come out
of a movie and asked if they enjoyed the movie they just saw on a scale of 1 to 5.

No, I didnt like the movie = Strongly Dislike

No, not really = Dislike
It was ok = Neutral
Yes, it was good = Like
Yes, I love the movie = Strongly Like

After I ask them if they enjoyed the movie I asked if they had eaten popcorn to see if
there was a lurking variable between the both of them, there was a convenience sample because
some people would just straight up say they didnt like popcorn or that the movie would have
been better with popcorn so I also had to take that into consideration.

Step 4:
For the statistics I got, I made pie charts showing the percentile of the scales to show the
difference between people with and without popcorn. And I have tables showing the amount of
answers that I received.

Step 5: The data that I collected shows that the population I had was more evenly spread out
when they didnt eat popcorn during the movie compared to the others thats did. I asked people
who watched the same movie so that I wouldnt have mixed results when asking if they liked the
movie or not. I thought that it was interesting that those who didnt eat popcorn had a more
evenly spread than those who did have popcorn, the chart with the percentile of people who had
popcorn shows that about 58% of people didnt like the movie even though they had popcorn and
on the chart that show those without popcorn the percentile of those who didnt like the movie
was 25% which is half of those with popcorn, I thought that was interesting, why was there such
a big difference, I was very confused and then I noticed the same with neutral that those with
popcorn are neutral 10% and those without popcorn where neutral 21% . I also noticed that the
means which are 4.4 and 5.6 for people who had popcorn and for those who didnt, this shows
that there isnt much of a difference between the two variables and in conclusion popcorn doesnt
affect the enjoyment of a movie.

Reflection
From doing this project I realized that a lot of people that live near me go to the movie
theater near my house, I mean a lot of people. I learned that some people have a real passion for
movies, I mean an obsession, there are people that will defend the movies they like with their
lives. When I would ask people and others would hear their opinion and would try to change it
by making sneer comments, I also learned that people can be very rude, sexist, and racist. Adults
would reject my question because of my age or my race and teens my age would reject my
question because of cliques and of how I looked, but I learned that thats just the world and I
really enjoyed doing this project and getting into critical thinking.
