Schellenberg Test Procedure

The document provides instructions for conducting a mix/drainage test to determine the stabilizing effect of asphalt on an aggregate mixture. Key steps include: 1) Heating an aggregate mixture to 170 degrees Celsius for 1 hour. 2) Adding 204g of bitumen and mixing for 105 seconds. 3) Allowing the mixture to cool for 1 hour then evacuating it from the beaker glass. 4) Calculating the drainage value to evaluate the stabilizing effect as very good, acceptable, or insufficient.

Feasibility of mix / drainage test:

Take the bucket with the aggregate mixture

out of the ofen and mix it manuan thoroughly
for a moment.
Give the aggregate mixture into the mix pan
and clamp that in the mixer (REGO Beating
and mixing machine, Modell: SM 2)

Weighed portion of approximately 1000g

asphalt mixture in a 170 degrees centigrade
tempered and weighed beaker glass (800
milliliter)

Storage of the beaker glass for 1 hour at 170

degrees centigrade in the oven
Among stirring lower the mixing whisk (6 wires)
Dry mixing time of the mineral aggregates is 15
seconds
Admixture of 204g bitumen
After mixing time 105 seconds

After 1 hour the beaker glass should be taken

out of the oven and evacuated

After taking of the mix pan follows a short manual

after mixing time for additional homogenisation

Feasibility of mix / drainage test:

Possible sticking mineral aggregates on the beaker glass have to be removed
and the beaker glass will be weighed
Calculation of the drainage value:
(glass after evacuation minus weight of the empty beaker glass) multiplied by 100%,
divided by weighed portion of asphalt)

For the calculated drainage values are following rules valid:

x < 0,2 very good stabilize effect
0,2 < x < 0,3 acceptable stabilize effect
x > 0,3 insufficient stabilize effect
