LUCKY CHARMS:
MARSHMALLOWS TO NUMBERS
OF SPOONFULS
By: Abby Jamison & Maitland McMillen
INTRODUCTION
Being tested is the cumulative amount of marshmallows
compared to the amount of spoonfuls of Lucky Charms eaten.
If the number of spoonfuls increase, then the cumulative
amount of marshmallows will also increase. It will have a
positive relationships, meaning as the number of spoonfuls
increase so will the cumulative number of marshmallows. It
will have a strong correlation. There will be a bowl of Lucky
Charms and random spoonfuls will be taken to collect each
data point, this is experimental data collection.
DATA SET
Population: the entire group of individuals being studied (our
project: boxes of Lucky Charms)
Sample: a part of the population from which we actually
collect the data from (our project: the bowl of Lucky Charms
used)
Variable: any characteristic of an individual (our project: the
explanatory variable is the number of spoonfuls, the response
variable is the cumulative amount of marshmallows)

GRAPH
INTERPRET R AND R
Correlation: measures the direction and the strength of a straight line.
Our project: correlation = 0.998
The correlation has a positive relationship, as predicted, as the number of
spoonfuls increase, the cumulative amount of marshmallows increase. The
correlation it is valid.
Coefficient of determination: the fraction (%) of the variation in the values of y
that is explained by the least regression of y on x.
Our project: the coefficient of determination is r2= 0.996, meaning that any
prediction will have a 99.6% variation. The data is valid.
PREDICTION
Step by step regression for 35 spoonfuls:
y=2.846x + 1.040
y=2.846(35) + 1.040
y 88 marshmallows
We predict that for 35 spoonfuls of Lucky Charms, approximately 88
marshmallows will be collected with an accuracy of 99.6%.
LURKING VARIABLES
Lurking variables that could have affected this data is that
there is a different amount of marshmallows in each box of
Lucky Charms. If there are more marshmallows in a box, the
higher the cumulative amount of marshmallows will be
available. Another lurking variable is amount of
marshmallows available to get from the bowl decrease with
the more spoonfuls taken. This could potentially impact the
ratio of oats to marshmallows for the rest of the bowl.
CONCLUSION
If the number of spoonfuls increase, then the cumulative
amount of marshmallows will also increase. Our hypothesis is
correct. Since r=0.998, the relationship is positive and
strong. We can conclude the with a 99.6% accuracy that the
explanatory variable is strongly correlated to the response
variable.
