OMNet++ is an object-oriented modular discrete event network simulation framework that can be used to model communication networks, protocol modeling, queuing networks, multiprocessors and distributed hardware systems, and validate hardware architectures. Examples of frameworks built on OMNet++ include INET for modeling communication networks, Castalia for wireless sensor networks, MiXiM for mobile and fixed wireless networks, and OverSim for overlay and peer-to-peer network simulation.

What is OMNet++?
OMNeT++ is an object-oriented modular discrete event

network simulation framework. It has a generic

architecture, so it can be (and has been) used in various
problem domains:

modeling of wired and wireless communication networks

protocol modeling
modeling of queuing networks
modeling of multiprocessors and other distributed hardware
systems
validating of hardware architectures
evaluating performance aspects of complex software systems

In general, modeling and simulation of any system where

the discrete event approaches suitable, and can be

conveniently mapped into entities communicating by
exchanging messages.

Examples

The
INET
Framework
is
an
open-source
communication networks simulation package for the
OMNeT++ simulation environment. The INET
Framework contains models for several wired and
wireless networking protocols, including UDP, TCP,
SCTP, IP, IPv6, Ethernet, PPP, 802.11, MPLS, OSPF,
and many others.

Examples

Castalia is a simulator for Wireless Sensor

Networks (WSN), Body Area Networks (BAN)
and
generally
networks
of
low-power
embedded devices.

Examples

MiXiM is an OMNeT++ modeling framework

created for mobile and fixed wireless networks
(wireless sensor networks, body area networks,
ad-hoc networks, vehicular networks, etc.).

Examples

OverSim is an open-source overlay and peer-topeer network simulation framework for the
OMNeT++ simulation environment. The simulator
contains several models for structured (e.g. Chord,
Kademlia, Pastry) and unstructured (e.g. GIA) P2P
systems and overlay protocols.
