Adhesives Fall 2015

The document discusses adhesive joints. It notes that adhesives bind materials together and resist separation. Advantages of adhesive joints include bonding different materials, distributing stress across joints, cost effectiveness, and design flexibility. Disadvantages include decreased stability at high temperatures and weakness in bonding large objects. Common adhesive types are epoxies, polyester resins, and nitrile rubber phenolics. Epoxies offer high strength, low shrinkage, low temperature curing, and moisture insensitivity. The document also discusses adhesive joint configurations, failure modes, and stresses in adhesive joints.

ADHESIVE JOINTS
An adhesive is any substance applied to the surfaces of materials
that binds them together and resists separation.

ADHESIVE JOINTS
Advantages of Adhesive Joints:
The use of adhesives offers many advantages over binding techniques such
as sewing, mechanical fastening, thermal bonding.
1. The ability to bind different materials together,
2. To distribute stress more efficiently across the joint
3. The cost effectiveness of an easily mechanized process
4. Increased design flexibility.

Disadvantages of adhesive Joints:

1. Decreased stability at high temperatures
2. Relative weakness in bonding large objects
3. Greater difficulty in separating objects during testing.

Adhesive materials
In order to increase the joint efficiency the rheological properties of adhesive
material should be quite similar to that of the adherents.

Common types of adhesives are:

- Epoxies

- Polyester resins

- Nitric rubber phenolics

Advantage of Epoxies adhesives

1. High internal strength in cohesion
2. Low shrinkage stresses
3. Low temperature cure and creep
4. Insensitivity to moisture.
Fillers like aluminum oxides, boron fibers are used to improve mechanical
strength.
Polyester resins are widely used in commercial fields for various structural
applications involving plastics operating at moderate temperature.
