Researchers from the University of Georgia and Ben-Gurion University created the world's smallest diode by connecting a single DNA molecule made from 11 base pairs to an electronic circuit a few nanometers in size. When layers of coralyne were inserted between layers of DNA, the current increased up to 15 times more when negative versus positive voltage was applied, demonstrating the DNA-based device was functioning as a diode at the nanoscale.

World's smallest diode[edit]

Researchers from the University of Georgia and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) have
developed a diode made from a molecule of DNA. Professor Bingqian Xu from the College of
Engineering at the University of Georgia and his team took a single DNA molecule made from 11
base pairs and connected it to an electronic circuit a few nanometers in size. When layers
of coralyne were inserted between layers of DNA, the current jumped up to 15 times larger negative
versus positive, which is necessary for a nano diode.[16][17]
