VIRGEN DE LOS ANGELES, AUGUST 2ND -The legend
holds that in 1636 The Virgin of Angels appeared to a girl
from Cartago many times as a small stone statue,people
walk from their homes to this church, no matter how far
they live, to pay respects to the patron saint of Costa Rica.
FIESTA DE LOS DIABLITOS -On the 30th of December at
midnight Borucas awake with grim devil masks. This ethnic
festival of the native people of the south of the country
recreates a fight to the death between the Indians
(Diablitos) and the invading Spaniards.

TRADITION - Costa Ricans are famous for


observing Tico time, known locally as "la
hora tica." Costa Ricans habitually arrive late,
often by 30 minutes or more, to dinner,
appointments, and get-togethers.Many
Costa Ricans do not view late arrivals as rude
and their tardiness is not meant to offend
MUSIC - Costa Ricans enjoy Latin, American
and British contemporary rock. However,
when it comes to dancing, most prefer the
traditional Latin rhythms of salsa, merengue,
cumbia, and bolero.

Roman Catholic is the state religion of Costa


Rica. 76.3% of Costa Ricans identify as
Catholic. An additional 13.7% are
Evangelical Christians, 1.3% are Jehovah's
Witness, and 0.7% are Protestant
Christian. The remaining 8% either have
no religion (3.2%) or are of other faiths
(4.8%), including Mormonism, Judaism and
Islam

Costa Rica is all about soccer. A few other


popular sports in costa rica are bicycling,
boxing, and wrestling. Children also play
childish games like sack races and jacks,
but soccer and surfing is their thing.

FAMOUS PEOPLE
Oscar Arias Snchezis probably the most
famous person in Costa Rican history. He
was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1987 for
his efforts to end civil wars which were
raging at the time in several other Central
American countries.

Juan SantamaraHe became a hero in


1856, when, in the middle of the battle
against William Walker and the filibusters,
he took a torch and burned down the
house where the enemy was hiding. Losing
his life for his nation, he became one of
the most famous people in Costa Rica.
