IGCSE Physics Worksheet 20.1

This document discusses how electromagnets and relays work. It explains that electromagnets use the magnetic field created by an electric current in a wire. A relay is then described as an important device that uses an electromagnet. The document provides questions about ordering electromagnets by strength and including components in a circuit diagram to switch a high-voltage motor using a low-voltage supply and relay.

Worksheet 20.

1
Electromagnets
Use what you know about electromagnets to explain how a
relay works.
Electromagnets make use of the fact that there is a magnetic field around
an electric current in a wire. A relay is an important device that uses an
electromagnet.
Questions
1 Three electromagnets are described here:
A number of turns 200, current 0.60A
B number of turns 100, current 0.60A
C number of turns 200, current 0.90A

Put them in order, from weakest to strongest.

2 State one other way of increasing the strength of an electromagnet.
The diagram shows the construction of an electromagnetic relay, a type of
switch.

3 Explain why the armature is made of iron.

4 The diagram also shows the circuit symbol for a relay. Copy the symbol
and label the two parts that represent the coil and the switch.

5 A relay can be used to switch on a high-voltage electric motor using a

low-voltage supply. Draw a circuit diagram to show how this can be done.
Your circuit should include the following items:

relay

low-voltage supply

high-voltage motor

switch

high-voltage supply for motor
