IGCSE Physics Worksheet 16.1

Two bar magnets would be used to show the attractive and repulsive forces between their poles. The north pole of one magnet would attract the south pole of the other, but both north poles or both south poles would repel each other. A bar magnet can attract but not repel an unmagnetized piece of steel because steel is a ferromagnetic material that can be magnetized but not demagnetized by a magnet. A bar magnet could magnetize a piece of soft iron by bringing the magnet close to the iron, with the magnetization spreading through the iron from the end nearest the magnet. Soft iron loses its magnetism easily, while steel retains magnetism for longer, making steel a better material for permanent magnets

Worksheet 16.

1
Magnets and magnetic fields
Test your knowledge of magnets and magnetic materials.
1 A bar magnet has two poles, north and south. Describe how you would
use two bar magnets to show the forces that two poles exert on each
other. What results would you expect to observe?
2 The pole of a bar magnet can attract a piece of unmagnetised steel.
Explain why it cannot repel the piece of steel.
3 Describe how you would use a bar magnet to magnetise a piece of soft
iron.
4 Soft iron and steel are both magnetic materials. State the difference
between their magnetic properties.
5 We use magnetic field lines to show a magnetic field.
a Draw a diagram to show the magnetic field lines around a bar magnet.
Mark two points in the field, A and B, such that the magnetic field is
stronger at A than at B.
b Explain how your diagram shows that the field is stronger at A than at
B.
