Concept and Aim

The human mind is something we, as a people, are fascinated by.
The way it works, the reason why it works this way and why certain
things affect us. One of those stimuli is music. For some reason, we
have little to no understanding over why certain music makes us
feel and react in particular ways. This has piqued my interest ever
since I studied music in GCSE music. When learning about the
structure of classical pieces like Mozart and Chopin it was
interesting how the same set of keys on a piano, played in a
different combination can result in nearly opposite emotional
responses. But was it the notes on the instrument? Or a different
reason? This is something Id like myself, and others to learn.
The documentary will be centred around a social experiment that
six volunteers will take part in. For a week of their lives, I will give
them a set playlist of songs of which they are only allowed to listen
to for that week. This music will be considered downbeat/more
depressing than most songs, and their social and mental
responses will be recorded through interviews and their own
personal vlogs that they will film themselves. This will then be
repeated for a second week, though this time the music will be
upbeat/happy.
Structured around this, the documentary will also contain
interviews with experts in music and psychology, as well as the
public, on their opinions on the topic. I will also ask them questions
about what makes them like the music they like, why music
affects us the way it does and other such related subjects.
Finally, the will be sections devoted to delving into the origin,
development and use of music of the tens of thousands of years.
This will include music in ancient times (Greek and Roman), its use
in WW2 and modern applications like commercial and medical.

Target Audience
To find out what the target audience for the documentary will be,
I conducted some primary research, through surveys, to
determine this. I gave the participants an overview of the
documentary and asked them what ages, genders, occupational
persuasions, and many others, would most likely want to watch
the documentary.
From the results below, we could tell that the audience would be
predominantly ages 18-30 and of all genders.

Furthermore, their occupation would be most likely

students/unemployed or fairly-paid professionals, as shown by
these results. As well as more open minded and creative people
that are either musicians or have an interest in music (or other
arts).

Channel Airing
From this data, it has been determined that the best time and
channel to air the documentary will be 19:30 on BBC 4. The
justification for this will be that BBC 4 is well known for being a
channel that commonly airs documentaries, and so would be
easy to find for viewers.
The time chosen is optimal as it is Prime Time which is when
most people will be watching TV. As well as this, it is before the
watershed line, which is beneficial as we may get younger
audiences to watch this. This wont bring up any issues as
there is no content inappropriate to have it after the
watershed.

Budget
The budget for this production is relatively small and easily
manageable. No equipment is needed to be purchased or
rented, and so all that is required are paying for transportation
for the volunteers of the experiment to get them to and from
the studio, as well as the cost of drinks/snacks for the
interviews. All in all, the total cost should some to roughly 2530.

Format, Style and Genre

Though this production most likely falls under the genre of a
simple documentary, it may also be considered a Special
Interest show due to how much of a focus I bring to music.
Though be it may be disregarded as the latter sue to music
being such a widespread and commonly popular medium.
The documentary is participatory/interactive, despite the
voiceover/filmmaker not being the one that takes part in the
experiment. Furthermore, the documentary will be using the
styles from realism and narration and realism, with no
dramatizations due to the validity of the experiment isnt
something we want under question.
