Transformations Reflections

This 45-minute lesson teaches 8th grade students about reflections through the use of virtual manipulatives and hands-on activities. Students will learn to identify lines of symmetry and determine if two figures are congruent after a reflection. They will explore reflections on regular polygons and discuss the relationship between the number of sides and lines of symmetry. The lesson closes by having students work in pairs to use reflectas to determine if different figures are congruent after a reflection.

Unit Title: Reflections, Translations, and Rotations

Subject Area: 8th grade geometry

Lesson Title: Transformations: Reflections
Length of Lesson: 45 minutes
Objectives:
Students will be able to find lines of symmetry within figures.
Students will be able to identify if two figures are congruent and
explain why they are congruent.
Standards:
Domain - Geometry 8.G
Cluster - Understand congruence and similarity using physical
models, transparencies, or geometry software.
Standard - 2. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is
congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first
by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given
two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the
congruence between them.
Anticipatory Set: (15 mins)
Introduce the Reflecta Does anyone know what this is called?
What do we use it for? Explain slide. Draw out preimage, mira
line, and image.
Recall: what is a reflection? Occurs when a figure and its image
have opposite orientations. Reflected image appears
backwards to the original figure.
Line of reflection refers to the line over which the figure is
reflected.
Show virtual manipulative. (mathisfun.com) Begin by showing
and explaining how we can recognize a reflection. Does this
show a reflection? Does this? Are the preimage and image the
same shape? Are they the same size?
If the two figures are the same size and same shape congruent
Have the students play with the reflecta.
o Can you place the buttons on the clown?
o Can you place the wigs on Vera?
Lesson Activities: (20 mins)
Define Symmetry: one-half of the figure matches the other half
perfectly when folded over.
Define Bilateral Symmetry: left and right

Define Line of symmetry: imaginary line where you could fold the
image and have both halves match exactly.
Can you name anything that has symmetry? Butterfly, human
body, star
Data Table Handout: How many lines of symmetry for each
regular polygon. What makes a polygon regular? (Side lengths
and angle measures are equal.)
o Where do your lines intersect for each figure?
o What can you say about the relationship between the number
of vertices and the number of lines of symmetry in a regular
polygon?
o What about for irregular polygons? Does this relationship still
work?
Isosceles triangle
Rectangle

Closure: (10 mins)

How do we know if the two figures are congruent?
What general statement can be said about a pre-image and an
image?
o When a shape is reflected, it remains congruent to the
original shape.
Congruency Handout: Have the students work with a partner
to determine if two figures are congruent. How can you use the
reflectas to determine if the two figures are congruent?
Evaluation:
Write down something you learned from the days lesson.
