Workout No. 5 (Assessment of Road Safety) : 15 MARCH 2016

The document provides information and data regarding the analysis of road safety and traffic accidents at various highway sections and a roundabout. It includes a table with 20 highway sections listing their length, daily traffic volume, and number of accidents. It then shows the calculations and analysis using classic statistical methods and rate quality control methods to determine which sections can be considered hazardous at a 95% confidence level. It also provides traffic volume data for a 5-leg roundabout and calculates its accident rate based on the annual average daily traffic and number of accidents reported for that location.

WORKOUT NO.

5
(ASSESSMENT OF ROAD
SAFETY)

15 MARCH 2016

Problem 1
In planning for highway improvements in a particular region, the traffic accidents have to be
analyzed to give priority to those hazardous or accident-prone locations. The table shows the twenty
sections considered for analysis. Sections marked with an asterisk (*) have almost similar
characteristics in terms of physical and traffic conditions. Among other marked sections, which would
you consider hazardous at 95 percent level of confidence?
Use:
a. Classic statistic method
b. Rate quality control method
