Writing Connection
---------------------------------------The students will write a letter regarding an environmental issue in the area that they
are passionate about. The purpose of the letter is to persuade someone who has the
power to take action on the issue to believe in what the student believes in. The
students will go step-by-step through the writing process, guided by in-class
instruction and discussion, as well as directions on each writing hand-out. The teacher
will start the Writers Workshop with the whole class gathered to brainstorm different
environmental issues that exist in the area similar to the one in Hoot. The teacher will
go over the writing process with students, and remind students of the recently learned
acronym O.R.E.O. for persuasive writing. Students will be able to publish their writing
by typing it up on the computer in order to make their letters official. This writing
piece connects students lives to the book by allowing them to relate to the main
characters in fighting for something that they believe in.

ORGANIZE IDEAS
What are some ways you can work toward resolving this issue?
REACH OUT. Who are you going to contact who is in a position to take action? This
may take some researching in books and on the Internet.
GET IT IN WRITING. People are more likely to listen when things are put into writing.
You will need to persuade those you reach out to that this issue is important enough for
their attention. How are you going to put all of your ideas into a letter?
Persuasive Writing
Trying to get the reader to change his or her mind, buy, or do something. Think about OREO:
O: Opinion
o Tell how you feel about the issue.
R: Reasons
o Tell some reasons or information to support your opinion.
E: Examples
o Tell facts with details to support your opinion.
O: Opinion
o Restate your opinion, with feeling. Is your audience persuaded?
