Biome Book

Desert biomes receive very little rainfall, typically less than 10 inches per year. They have high daytime temperatures but extreme cold at night due to the dry air. Plants and animals in deserts have adaptations like water storage or short lifecycles to survive the harsh conditions with little water. Common desert plants include cacti and bushes, while animals include lizards, snakes, and camels.

DESERT BIOME

(Fourth/Fifth Grade)
By Dragana Custic

DEFINITION OF BIOME
A biome is a large region
of Earth that has a
certain climate and
certain types of living
things.
Major biomes include
tundras, forests,
grasslands, and deserts.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DESERT

BIOME
Deserts have very little rainfall, less than 10 inches a year. They
also have very dry soil, little water, and fast evaporation.
Sometimes rain evaporates before it hits the ground. Deserts
can be 100 degrees in the day, but freezing cold at night. Most
desert animals are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the hot
day and are awake at night. There are very few plants that can
grow here. While there are many types of deserts, they all share
one characteristic: they are the driest places on Earth!
Deserts have extreme heat and dryness, sudden flash floods
and cold nights. Because of these dry conditions, there is
limited plant and animal life in deserts.

FOOD WEB OF PRODUCERS AND

CONSUMERS FOUND IN THE DESERT
Producer: Found in the beginning of the food chain.
Producers are plants and vegetables. All energy comes
from the sun and plants are the ones who make food with
that energy. They use the process of photosynthesis.
Consumer: The next link in the food chain. There are
three levels of consumers. The levels start with the
organisms that eat plants. They are called primary
consumers or herbivores. They will not eat animals.
Secondary consumers eat primary consumers. Another
word for a secondary consumer is a carnivore or meat
eater.
In some ecosystems, there is a third level of consumer
called the tertiary consumer. These consumers are called
omnivores and they can eat meat, plants, and anything
else.
Food chain: Shows how each living thing gets food and
how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to
creature. Food chains begin with plant life and end with
animal life. Some animals eat plants, some animals eat
other animals.

ILLUSTRATION OF THE
TEMPERATURE AND RAINFALL

Summary of the DESERT biome

Desert biomes are the driest of all the biomes. In fact, the most
important characteristic of a desert is that it receives very little rainfall.
Most deserts receive less than 300 mm a year compared to rainforests,
which receive over 2,000 mm. That means that the desert only gets 10
percent of the rain that a rainforest gets! The temperature in the desert
can change drastically from day to night because the air is so dry that
heat escapes rapidly at night. The daytime temperature averages 38C
while in some deserts it can get down to -4C at night. The temperature
also varies greatly depending on the location of the desert. Since desert
conditions are so severe, the plants that live there need to have
adaptations to compensate for the lack of water. Some plants, such as
cacti, store water in their stems and use it very slowly, while others like
bushes conserve water by growing few leaves or by having large root
systems to gather water or few leaves. Some desert plant species have
a short life cycle of a few weeks that lasts only during periods of rain.
