Week 2 Portfolio Reflection: Explain the difference between Assessment

FOR AS OF learning with examples.

Assessment for Learning Formative Assessment documents students
achievement
as well as guides instructional decisions and helps students learn. The
main reason behind this type of learning is to help the students develop
their knowledge through different type of assessments such as homework,
projects, tests and observations. This type of learning is effective for
teachers to identify how a student is progressing as well planning for
future lessons. It is important for the teachers to be aware of the types of
assessments they are doing e.g. if it a group assignment then the
teachers need to be aware that ALL students are contributing and it is not
just a reflection of one person in the group doing all the work.
E.g. homework, in-class assignments, performance assessments,
teacher observations, classroom tests, rich assessment tasks,
Assessment of Learning - Summative assessment provides evidence of
student achievement for purposes of public reporting and accountability.
This type of learning is generally used at the completion of a covered topic
to help the teachers understand how much the students learnt. Typical
types of assessment include tests, end of year exams, or just topic tests
so that teachers can keep track of how the students are performing. Using
this method can also be effective for the teachers so that they can identify
if the unit has been taught well or whether they have to make
improvements to their lessons to cater for better learning.
E.g. tests, end-of year exams, standardised tests
Assessment as learning occurs when students reflect on and monitor
their progress to inform their future learning goals. (formative) This type
of learning throughout a topic in which students can assess their
improvements/gained knowledge and track what methods learn for them
and what methods do not. Assessment as learning is also effective at the
beginning of a topic so that the teachers can get a gauge on what the
students know and so that they can plan their classes around this. This
can also lead to the students setting future learning goals so that they
have something to strive towards.
In summary, the difference between each of the learning assessments are
that assessment for learning uses homework and assignments to aid
student knowledge development, assessment of learning covers testing at
the completion of a unit and assessment as learning is where students can
reflect, monitor and plan their learning.
