This article is about depression in the elderly patient. It talks
about the signs and symptoms of depression and it also says a
few things to treat it with. I would use this in all parts of my
research because there is plenty of information for every part
of the paper.
1. Relevancy: this article relates to my topic because it covers many
different topics within the topic of geriatric depression. With a review
of the article it is long and has a lot of information in it. It doesnt
cover all parts of my research question but it does cover part of it.
2. Accuracy: I typed these from the bottom up so like many of the other
articles they are not bias and this article does not have any faulty
information. The data comes from research that was done but I do not
know when or anything about the research.
3. Currency: this article is on the border of being current. It says that
depression is a mental and emotional disorder which is what it is still
characterized today so I feel that it is still new enough to be an
effective in research.
4. Authority: I do not know much about the author of this article. It did
not say that it was wrote by a doctor and there where no credentials
with it but it was edited by a doctor of geriatrics. So that means that
the editor should not have allowed it to be published if there was false
information in it.
5. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to inform people of on the
geriatric depression. It also gives different ways to treat it. The third
thing that this article produces is early signs and symptoms that can
be detected and changed before the person is depressed.
6. Rating: 3 I give this article a three because the information is good
but not as good as the other articles this is the worst one. Not only
that but the website was not easy to navigate on. It was slow. Very
slow.

This article is only about the different signs and symptoms of
depression. I would use this in the part of my paper where I
talk about being able to recognize the early signs of
depression.
1. Relevancy: this article is relevant to the topic it is on depression of
the elderly. Scanning the article it seemed like there was a lot
information for being an online article. This article has a lot of
information that could be used to answer my research question.
2. Accuracy: this article had some new information in it that I had not
heard so that was new. Although the information is new and I have not
heard it after critically thinking it through it makes since. Yet again the
information is presented in a factual manner.
3. Currency: this is a new article. That is why some of the information
may have been different compared to the other articles that I have
listed below. In this particular article there is no numbers that support
the information but like I said above the information seem like it make
since.
4. Authority: yet again this is wrote by doctors. I feel that most articles
on something that is medical or related to the medical field is going to
be wrote by doctors. With that being said doctors have the knowledge
and credentials to write articles.
5. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to inform people on the signs
and symptoms of depression. The neat thing that I found in this article
is that it said that elderly can be depressed but not sad. That seems
contradicting to me but it really makes since.
6. Rating: 5 I rate this high because it has information in it that is new
but I feel that it is accurate. The quality of the article is easy to
understand and organized in a good manner.

This article is about the treatment of depression it includes

different forms including pharmacological and non
pharmacological. I would use this in the part of the paper that
I mention the different forms of treatment.
1. Relevancy: this source relates to my topic because it has information
on treating depression in the elderly with drugs. This article is different
then the rest because it is more of the pharmacological way to treat
depression rather than the risk factors and such.
2. Accuracy: this article I feel is more towards treating depression with
drugs rather than treating the underlying cause of the depression so I
would say that it is a little bias. However I feel in some cases you
cannot really treat the underlying cause so for that reason I do not
feel as though the bias is affecting the source at all. The data comes
from studies that have been done.
3. Currency: this to is an older article but I feel like I was having a hard
time finding newer articles in the databases. I feel that the
pharmacological stuff behind treating depression has not really
changed all that much over the past 5 years though so I would say that
this information is still true today. Anti-depressants are still the
number one way to deal with it even though they have bad side
effects.
4. Authority: the author of this has the credentials necessary to be
considered an authority on this subject. He has his doctorates in
pharmacology, which is the study of medicine. The authors all work at
different colleges on different research teams.
5. Purpose: the purpose of this article is to inform the reader the
effects, positive and negative, that the medications for depression
have on the elderly patients. The intended audience would be the
people that are giving the medication and any one in the medical field.
6. Rating: 5 I rate this article very high because I feel that it is
important that people know how medications can effect the person
taking them positively and negatively. It is important to me because I
have seen and heard many stories where a person starts taking
antidepressants and then end up taking their own life.

This article is about how the depression could be prevented in

the elderly patients. Once again I would use this in the
treatment part of my paper.
1. Relevancy: this source does relate to my topic. It does not really
pick address that there is a problem it just presents the information
and lets the reader chose for themselves. This article is different form
the others because of the statistical analysis that it gives.
2. Accuracy: from what I can tell the information is accurate for the
time that this was written. That being said the numbers have changes
since then so that makes it a little less accurate. The data that is in
the article comes from reports that are done and submitted to
researchers.
3. Currency: this article is not current. That is a downfall to this article
because it has a lot of data information in it which none of that would
be up to date anymore. Im sure that there are articles out there that
have the updated numbers but I just did not find them.
4. Authority: The authors examined a broad range of clinical,
functional, and psychosocial predictors of incident depressive episodes
in a well-characterized cohort of older primary care patients. Allowing
them to get the information that they needed to write this. They were
part of the researchers that were doing the experiment so they know
information first hand.
5. Purpose: The purpose of this article it to inform the reader on
prevention of late-life depression a disabling condition with often poor
outcomes in primary care, requires identification of seniors at highest.
The author did not omit important facts or data that I could tell most of
the stuff that he said I had heard in class. The information was clear
and easy to understand.
6. Rating 4. I rank this a four because the article was fairly short I felt
like they could have been more throe with the information. I did like
the numbers that they provided though but I am a numbers type of
person so I feel that some researchers may not like that so much. But
over all it was a pretty good article.

This book was about the different health problems that can
come from being depressed. I would use this in the treatment
part of my paper most likely because I could list the different
problems that could arise if the depressed patient does not get
treatment.
1. This book is very relevant to the topic considering it is our book for a
nursing class that is specifically for geriatric aged patients. The book
supports the topic that geriatric depression is a major illness that
needs to be stopped because it causes some patients lives to be
shorter. This book does contain a few of the same views as other
sources but I consider it very reliable.
2. Accuracy: this is not biases at all. As you can tell by the title this
book is evidenced based so that tells me that they have done studies
that show that the results and information in the book are accurate.
The information is free of any errors as far as I have read I have yet to
fine one.
3. Currency: yes this book is only four years old. That is on the edge of
being current but as of right now it is a current source. There are other
sources out there that are newer than this one but I do not think that
the results and information in them are a whole lot different compared
to this book.
4. Authority: all of the editors and some of the authors for this book
have their PhD or they are all certified in a geriatric practice. Many of
them are teachers or deans or researchers. I feel as though their
education that they have received qualifies them to write about this
topic.
5. Purpose: the purpose of this book is to educate the students that are
going into the nursing field. Most if not all of the information in this
book is evidenced based meaning that the things have been used and
studied and proven so it is presented in that point of view. The
information is clearly presented and very straightforward.
6. Rating: I would rate this book a 5. I just real like it has very good
information in it. As I said before it is evidenced based which in my
opinion makes it very reliable and trust worthy and the fact that it was
wrote and edited by some of the best educated people on the topic
adds to that.

York, NY: Guilford Press.

This book had different types of scales in it that are used to

treat and diagnosis different stages of depression. This book
was helpful because of all the different kinds of scales that it
had listed. I would use this in the part of my paper that as the
different kinds of diagnosis based on the scales.
1. Relevancy: this book relates to my topic because my topic is the
same as the topic of this book they are both on geriatric depression.
This article is not like the other book that is listed above it had charts
and scales in it so that the nurse can assess the pt and rate their
depression. The information supports my topic because of the
information that I read about in it. They also agree that depression is a
mental illness.
2. Accuracy: This book does not having any faulty reasoning to it that I
can see. Everything that I have read in it seems to be true and match
up with what the other sources say. The information in the book is
fact; it is proven by the results of the scales and charts that are in it.
3. Currency: this book is very current it was just published last year.
The information in the book is new so it has yet to have a ton of
research done on it because it is mostly on how to rate the depression
but they did do studies on it before publishing it. From those results
though the information seems to be true up to date.
4. Authority: yet again this book is the same as the one above it was
wrote by a doctor in the geriatric field of practice. Gary J. Kennedy, MD,
is Director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and of the Fellowship
Training Program at Montefiore Medical Center and Professor of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of
Medicine, Bronx, New York. Dr. Kennedy is board certified in Geriatric
Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. That tells me that he is very
educated and knows his information on the topic.
5. Purpose: the purpose of this book is to inform. It informs nurses how
to rank and classify the depression that the elderly patient is having
then it also tells them ways to treat or intervening for the patient.
6. Rating: I would rate this a 4. I went with a four rather tan a five
because o the fact that his book did not have the number of educated
editors that the book above did and I just think that the other book was
more useful and provided more information.

associated with depression in the older aged patients. I would
use this in the part of my paper that talks about the signs and
symptoms. It is related to my other sources because some of
them also talk about the different signs and symptoms.
1. Relevancy: this source is relevant do to the fact that it
talks about the signs and symptoms of depression.
2. Accuracy: the information in this article seemed to be
accurate many of the signs and symptoms listed where
the same that other sources had.
3. Currency: the source seemed to be up to day it was not
more than five years old.
4. Authority: I could not find who wrote this article I looked
around the web site and could not find it but I would
guess someone in the medical field or someone that had
some kind of experience with depression would have
written it.
5. Purpose: the purpose of this article was to make
everyone aware of the signs and symptoms that are
associated with depression.
6. Rating I would rate this a 3-4 it seemed to have good
information but it didnt really have as much as I would
have liked to see.
