Outline 1

Britain contributes significantly to the millions of animals used in testing worldwide each year. In 2002, Britain conducted over 2.73 million experiments using animals, a 4.2% increase from the previous year. Rodents make up the vast majority of animals tested in Britain at 84%, followed by fish and other small animals. Medical research and drug development account for around 80% of animal testing, and this number is expected to rise as treatments target more complex diseases. While some support animal testing under certain conditions, most British citizens oppose medical testing on animals and view it as morally wrong.

Animal Testing On The Rise Because Consumerism
(Use Complete Sentences)
I.

Introduction:
A.

Hook: Consumerism is the protection or promotion of the interests of consumers.

B.
Elaboration: This ties almost directly into animal testing. Medicine and Beauty products are the
most famously tested on animals, these are the tons of thousands of products that are pumped out to
consumers every year. A piece of evidence I found that most accurately estimated the number of animals
used a year worldwide in animal testing "The most reliable estimate, based on data from a 2005, suggest
115.3 million are used in experiments annually (likely to be an underestimate)."(2) According to several
articles I read the number rises each year.
C.
Thesis Statement: Over millions of animals are used a year for medical test, make up tests, and
more. Britain is a main contributor to this epidemic.

II.

Main Point One: What is the Great Britain statistic of animal testing used a year?
A.
Topic Sentence: Great Britain is one of the most common countries to find animal testing, but
unlike other countries they try to limit their use of animals unless completely necessary. They are still
one of the leading contributors to animal testing use.
B.
Textual Support: "2.73 million experiments in 12 months of 2002. Total number of procedures
rose by 4.2% in 2001."(5) "UK law both requires and regulates experiments on animals."(3)
C.
Explanation: The UK is one of the three top countries that use animals for experiments. It is
apparent that they try to reduce the use, but they are failing to that because the exact opposite is
happening.

III.

Main Point Two: What animal is tested most on in Britain?

A.
Topic Sentence: Throughout Britain there are several kinds of animals that are used in the
experiments, as well as several guidelines and methods for curtain animals and experimental tests.
B.
Textual Support:
"Which animals are used?
o Rodents 84%
o Fish, amphibians, reptiles 12%
o Large mammals 2.1%

Small mammals 1.4%

Dogs and cats 0.3%
Primates 0.1%
Great apes such as chimpanzees cannot be used in experiments."(4)
"Any new drug must be tested on at least two different species of live mammal, one of which
must be a large non-rodent."(3)

C.
Explanation: The animal statistics on what animals are used more of them than others may
have changed over the years. This was the most recent numbers I could find. The guidelines set for
experimentation of drugs is an example of one rule that applies to medical experiments.

IV.

Main Point Three: What products are most normally tested on animals?
A.
Topic Sentence: My research proved that medical products are probably the most abundant of
all products tested on animals for multiple reasons.
B.
Textual Support: About 80% are for research and drug development. Safety testing accounts
for most of the rest. (5) the suggest that new classes of drugs now in development that act in very
specific ways in the body may lead to more animals being used in future years, and to the use of more
primates. For example, as science seeks to tackle the neurological diseases afflicting a greeting
population, it is said we will need a steady supply of monkeys on which to test the safety and
effectiveness of the next generation pills.(6) Testing cosmetics on animals was outlawed in Britain in
two phases between 1997-98. (7) of toxicological tests last year, 61% were for pharmacological
safety and efficiency. (7)
C.
Explanation: As the text states most of the tests are for drug development. There is a new drug
being formed and that will possibly exponentially grow the number of animals annually used a year. It
also states that cosmetic testing is illegal and that automatically removes it form the running.

V.

Main Point Four: How do the British citizens feel about animal testing?
A.
Topic Sentence: There certainly is a large group of people against and for animal testing, but the
question here is what is the verdict from the British citizens. Do they approve it or disapprove?
B.
Textual Support: attitudes toward animal testing factored into two interpretable factors:
General attitudes toward animal testing, and animal welfare and conditions of testing. Overall, there
was support for animal testing under the right conditions, although there was also concern for the
welfare of animals and conditions under which testing took place. (1) majority of Britain opposed to
medical testing on animals (8) only 37% of British respond and said medical testing on animals is
morally acceptable, and 54% said it is morally wrong.
C.
Explanation: Overall the British citizens seem to find it more in humane than morally
acceptable across the board. Their also seems to be an increase of female concern.

VI.

Conclusion:
A.
Re-summarize Topic Sentences: Consumerism is slowly increasing the amount of animal used
a year through the product of medical drugs. Britain, and not only Britain, is using animals a an unreplenish able resource.
B.
Restate Thesis Statement: Millions of animals are being used every year for experimentation
and Britain is one of the main issues.
C.
Major Takeaway: Possibly if Britain could find an alternative way of testing drugs we could
reduce the amount of animals used each year.
