Udl Final

This UDL lesson plan aims to teach students math concepts like sorting, counting, graphing, and analyzing data using M&Ms as manipulatives. The objectives are for students to sort M&Ms by color, count each color, graph the results, and answer questions about the graph with 80% accuracy. Materials include M&Ms, color charts, graph options, and question sheets in various formats. The lesson aligns with New York state standards and uses the principles of UDL to provide multiple means of representation, expression and engagement through varied activities, supports, and opportunities for self-assessment.

UDL Lesson
Subject: Math

Objective(s):
o Given an unmarked M&M graph students will (see below) with
an 80% success rate

Sort M&Ms according to color.

Count M&Ms by each color.
Graph M&Ms by color
Answer questions about the student created graph

Materials Needed:
o For Students:
One egg carton of assorted M&Ms
One M&M candy color chart
One M&M graph picture choices
One question sheet to M&M graph
One question sheet to M&M graph (higher order
thinking)
o For Teacher:
Smartboard
Kahoot quiz
Standard/Benchmark
This lesson will align with the New York State Standards for
Mathematics. This unit will follow the New York State Standard,
(6.SP.4): statistics & probability-summarize & describe
distributions. (7.SP.A.2): statistics and probability, use data to
draw up inferences. (7.RP.2): ratios and proportions, analyze
proportional relationships & use them to solve real world &
mathematical problems.

Anticipatory Set:
o Motivate- The M&Ms are a motivator, after the lesson the
students are allowed to enjoy the candies
o Assess or Review Prior Knowledge-Students will gather in
small groups to view a a smartboard lesson of a previously
performed lesson on graphing. This activity can be found in
(Favorite Color Crayon)
o
Introduction of Topic: A modified book on the topic will be
presented to the class on the smart board. This activity can be
found in ()
o Organize your lesson: students will organize their M&M's by
using egg cartons (modified for lower students by having the
color of the M&M drawn on the bottom of the egg carton the
M&M should be placed in according to color) some students
won't have the colors colored in the egg cartons because they

are higher level & can choose where to sort their m&m's.
Worksheets and lesson stages will provide an effective flow to
the lesson.

Multiple Means of Representation

o MMR
Guideline 1: Provide Options for Perception
Checkpoint 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the
display of information
o Students will be able to learn the lesson
content through multiple types of layouts.
(printed material, smartboard, kahoot,
manipulatives)
Guideline 2: Provide Options for Language,
Mathematical Expression and Symbols
Checkpoint 2.3 Support decoding of text,
mathematical notation, and symbols.
o Students will be able to learn
mathematical terms and concepts through
text, images, and examples relating to real
world applications.
Multiple Means of Expression
o MME
Guideline 5: Provide Options for Expression and
Communication
Checkpoint 5.3 build fluencies and graduated
levels of support for practice and performance.
o The lesson provides flexibility of digital
media media to reach and engage all
learners. Leveled supports (manipulatives,
varied levels of questions, smart board,
kahhoot) challenge and support all levels
of learners.
Multiple Means of Engagement
o

MME
Guideline 7: Provide Options for recruiting
interest
Checkpoint 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and
authenticity
o The lesson is designed to provide varied
activities and sources of information so
that the material can be personalized and
relevant to each student. The use of
M&Ms and Colors and other symbols are
both age and socially appropriate for each
and every learner in the class.
Guideline 9: Provide Options for Self Regulation

Checkpoint 9.3 develop self assessment and

reflection
o Questions about the M&M graph lesson
will be provided as a last step. Students
will be able monitor and reflect on their
understanding of the lesson.
